Part that sucks the most is that the gear that drops is based off your current level. So any rares you find will still be level 16/17 until you build up the light levels to find level 20 blues :) Can still find level 20 legendary and exotics.
I found the best way to start is grind out a few strikes to get gear and level up engram ! once you get a level up with him you get some rares and high chance at legendary ;3 ... once you get bored of that go kill some people and test your RNG in the crucible :)

I keep them when for I start making a different class... Higher light lvl....

Thanks. I like the game. Just don't have the time to "grind" much.

Then you will just have to chip away at it and like others have mentioned use your Vanguard marks to buy legendary gear so you take the luck out of the mix.
