The fact is Satan was painted as Evil as at first Judaism & Christianity didn't have an opposite to Good. They needed something to use to keep people adhering to that religion. If you were bad and didn't follow these particular rules you will end up in hell. Satan was hardly mentioned in the Old Testament, twice I think.
