Why People Continue To Play Destiny

After a lot of thought, I've stumbled across the answer to why Destiny continues to have 3.2 million players every day, despite the rage and frustration over the broken loot system, and other RNG mechanics. I thought to myself: why do people continue to play despite being trolled by the loot system? Why do people continue to come back to Xûr every week, or beat the raid every week for their shot at loot, only to be disappointed by the endless wave of shards and sunbreakers? Why do legendary and exotic engrams drop armor for random classes? Why are rewards never tailored to your character? Why are they making everything a dice throw? The answer is now plain as day, and actually quite simple. Bungie is taking advantage of innate human gambling addictions. There are reasons why Bungie continues to make everything RNG-based, despite the obvious rage coming from the community: This artificially extends the life of the game. There is not enough endgame content to keep players busy from launch until December, when the DLC (disc-locked content) unlocks. If players work hard enough to obtain the loot through a reliable method, they're afraid they won't stick around until the DLC. Why continue to play when you've got everything you've had your sights on, right? Creating three characters still won't last if there are reliable ways of obtaining a certain piece of gear for those who are incredibly dedicated. Moving on to engram rates, they create exotic engrams to drop for random classes because A: they want to encourage people to start new characters (artificial lifespan), and B: they want to keep people coming back to Xûr. Didn't get the weapon/armor you want? Ahh, he might have it next week. But to get the materials to buy it, you've gotta play a bunch before you can buy it, when you have a 5/6 chance of not getting the armor you want. They are capitalizing on the fact that people have innate gambling addictions, and this is precisely what keeps people coming back. The RNG in Atheon's teleportation is designed to artificially increase the difficulty of the raid. Instead of creating mechanics that are difficult at first to figure out, they create a mechanic that destroys all forms of strategy and role-filling, as it should be. The RNG in the Crucible keeps players playing for a shot at loot drops, which is why it's possible to get exotics as rewards, even for the player who goes 1-35 in Clash. Destiny does not reward performance at all. It simply rewards you for being present at the end of an activity. There is no incentive to perform well. See what I'm talking about? Everywhere there's RNG in the game, there's another example of Bungie capitalizing on the innate addiction to gambling. It's all a slot machine, people, and guess what? They own you. They own everyone who hasn't realized this yet. They own each and every person who continues to check Xûr every week, hoping that their desired Exotic will be for sale. And this is exactly why the loot system will never, ever, ever be fixed. There's not enough real content in the game for people to come back to, so they make the entire meta-game a slot machine so that they can rope people into playing their gutted, half-assed, disappointing excuse for what we were promised was going to be a truly engaging experience. I'm on to you, Bungie. I'll be keeping tabs on the development of this game, but you have been exposed now. First it was the Disc Locked Content, then it was the unneeded nerfs, and then it was the RNG mechanics in the Vault of Glass. You may have everyone else fooled, but I smell bullshit. And I smell it strong. It seems nobody cares about making a truly good game anymore. Not even you. Edit: There are an astounding amount of people in here who seem to think that I am complaining about having to work hard to get gear. That is not what I am talking about. The only way to get to level cap is by rolling a dice in the Vault of Glass week after week. This isn't grinding, nor is this hard work. One could theoretically join in as a 25 just before the Templar is killed and receive raid armor. This is not how a raid should reward people. There is no hard work where the particular RNG of this loot system is concerned. Edit 2: Because some people are apparently brain-dead, read this before you post.
While every MMO has an RNG component to it's loot system, I feel that a loot system where you cannot get endgame gear other than playing a slot machine once a week creates artificial replay value. Leveling up your gear? It takes a while, but you will get there. Buying faction gear? Could take a while, but you will get there. Hypothetical scenario: The greatest Destiny player carries the worst Destiny player through the Vault of Glass every week. Because of this particular system, there is a good chance that the best Destiny player never gets raid armor, which is required to reach level cap, while the worst player acquires all raid armor and an Epilogue. Then Xûr sells him a helmet because the best player carried him through the weekly. See the problem here? People ultimately aren't rewarded for their skill in this game, as they should be. Other MMO's reward one mostly based off of skill and how much time you put into a task. When there is an element of RNG present, it is usually possible to farm the sources of the loot because of this very reason. In Destiny, it is the opposite. Players are locked out of the loot rewards every week after they complete the raid. Even if someone beats the Vault 50 times, it is theoretically possible to never attain appropriate rewards.
• It's all about timing it's not to get people addicted to gambling. Expect the majority of people to take till December to get to 30 and all leveled in raid gear. Once the DLC rolls out there will probably be a guaranteed non-RNG way to get to level 30. This is a similar formula that a lot of MMO's use. It's not a new system. You are right though it is a method to keep people playing the game. Otherwise people would finish in a week or two and be done with the game till DLC. The only thing that is unavoidable RNG in this game is the raid gear. All the other exotic/legendary gear can be purchased from vendors. Feel free to stop playing at any time. You can come back at the DLC if you don't like the RNG the current raid is. This is how the game is designed though and you right it probably won't be changed.

So what OP? Most games that last longer with their customers are ones that use RNG. If it wasn't in the game people would beat the game in a week or two and have no reason to spend countless hours farming. Source: WoW

Hey look, another long winded post blaming Bungie for doing something that isn't wrong. The OP has obviously never played a game with a RNG based tier loot system before, otherwise he'd know it's all part of the game. I mean 12 million people paying WoW, at it's height, couldn't be wrong right? What about all those people grinding away at (insert latest ARPG here). Yeah, Bungie isn't doing anything new here OP. Oh and before you try to argue, 90 in WoW is the level 20 of bungie. Getting to 30 is like getting the max iLvL in wow. It is all about perspective.

            • Im not, the loot system is broken... and it has nothing to do with the RNG... The RNG is fine... everyones just whining because they dont want to put in the work. Why will I quit in a few weeks? Because everyones rolling with 29s etcs.... because they get handouts of gear.... the game is too easy... and challenge has been bypassed and the sad bit? Scrubs are fine with it and are still complaining about handouts... Its done though...At this point, I may not even touch the DLCs... I wanted a challenge... not this straight fps bs.... Ill stick to BF4, thanks.

              • Way to just say what every MMO ever has always done. I didn't have to read past the first few lines to know what this thread was. Granted, I skimmed the rest to make sure. Just look up anything about MMO's and psychology. It's about giving little by little over time to keep the player engrossed enough to continue playing.

My reasons are my own, so I suggest you move along if you don't like the game and let that be the end of it.

                          • I think the problem most people have with this game is that they expect to get all gear through RNG. You're only setting yourself up for disappointment if you think this. Get gear through rep/marks any thing else is a pleasant surprise.

                            • You are an idiot... I don't gamble or have innate feelings towards doing it? Your whole argument is based on the assumption people are mindless Noobs stumbling along playing for the sake of it... God knows what that makes the people still playing and moaning their gambling addiction is being taken advantage of by a computer game...?

Check the whole reply before you cry "Fanboy" I'm assuming you've never played a "Loot game" before? Here's how it works... Kill stuff hoping to get loot. Many kills later get loot. Sweet. Equip new loot, use new loot to kill many things (faster and more efficiently than before) hoping for better loot. Many kills later get better loot. Sweet. Equip new loot, use new loot to kill many things (faster and more efficiently than before) hoping for better loot. Many kills later get better loot. Sweet. Equip new loot... Get the idea? This is not some new underhanded mechanic that Bungie came up with. See Borderlands, Diablo, etc. etc. this has been a staple mechanic in games for years. Now, where Destiny falls down is that in less than a month everyone got all the endgame gear and have nothing else to do. My buddy and I were going to play tonight and couldn't come up with anything to do. Nightfall? Done. Weeklies? Done. Bounties? What for? Patrols? Why? Story? Pass. Strikes? Again? Raid? Oh, yeah! Wait, only have 2 friends playing this and no matchmaking. Guess not. I'm bored. Bungie gave it up too fast. The RNG is actually TOO generous not the other way around. A month in I should NOT have endgame legendary gear yet I do and there's nothing else to do. Love the game but now I've been there and done that.

                                • your point is? Diablo, Borderlands, Peggle, Farmville, nearly every goddamn game where you can get "Stuff" takes advantage of those gambling addictions... The sentence "this is really addictive" is often used to praise a game...and holds true for Destiny, I'm spending a lot of time with it and when friends are online, and we go into the crucible or the raid or the strikes, then it's a lot of fun and isn't that what's important?

I knew that Bungie were tapping into the reward section of our brains the moment I saw that Crusible loot drops were random. I have made a few posts on this matter and there are a few other games that do it but not so obviously as Destiny. Maybe I will sue for "Destiny addiction" and for the fact there was no warnings displayed to me that this game could cause addiction.

                                  • I don't play the game to get loot. I play because it's fun. I play because I wanna level up and build out my characters. I have one of each class that I keep bouncing between so I can build out their skill trees. I could care less about getting specific pieces of loot. Also every loot based game uses gambling to keep it's player base hooked.

No. You have an incredible amount of time to talk about your conspiracy theories and nonsense. Maybe you should invest it into something else, like playing a game that doesn't have MMO elements. People are lucky enough to hit 30 and have max gear in a game like this so quick. Go play WoW, Rift, ESO, Diablo, Lotro, Runescape, Aion, Star wars, etc. Tell me if you max out your character with the best gear in a month or two. Jokes on you bud. You sound like a needy kid that's angry because you didn't get what you wanted, waste of good -blam!-ing forum space. Am I a fan boy? No. I'm am adult that doesn't think like children anymore. Yes it can be a grind doing some bounties, but it's an item you bought for around £40-£100 if bought dlc which most would spend on 1 night out with our friends so well worth the price tag I think. When the DLC is released in December the true guardians will be ready :-)
