Hi all, Which primary weapon do you primarily use; and why? I am debating which primary should I use and I would very much like some of your opinions and suggestions to help me to decide. I very much like the scout rifle for it has good impact, which interrupts the targets, and good damage. Also I always aim for a head shot (or a belly shot against the Vex). So I have grown fond of the scout rifle since I started playing. I also like the hand cannon too; except for its relatively small cartridge size painfully long reloading speed. I have tried to really like it and use it but I have always ended falling back to the scout rifle. The pulse rifle is a good choice too although I do not use it that often. I feel that it is not as easy to use as the auto rifle and not as impactful as the scout rifle and the hand cannon. I however have to say that the pulse is very good at one thing: scoring headshot. First you aim at the chest just below the neck, which is larger and easier to aim than the head, then the recoil will move the muzzle up and you will hit the head. Lately, I have done some PvP matches and some team PvE. I have noticed that a lot of people are using the auto rifle. I would say nearly a majority of them. For me, I just cannot get used to the constant recoil and the constant adjusting of aim. I understand its appeal and it also manages to score a lot of team kills too. With the auto rifle, you can start aiming at the general direction before moving into a more precise aiming, and thus almost always hits something. WIth the scout rifle and the hand cannon, you have to aim first before firing, and then reengage when necessary and fire again. In PvE teaming, it annoys me to see that my kill counts are lower than a auto rifle user but I believe I deal more or less the same amount of damage; just that my bullets hit fewer targets. So anyway, what do you use? Please share your views on the primary weapons. Thanks!

  • I use pretty much just use Auto Rifles I maxed out the Suros and Epilogue now working on finishing my Shadow Price. Once I get my hands on an Ice Breaker the Suros will probably never be touched again.

Auto, because it's a great all purpose weapon. I use scout rifles in many situations as well, and hand cannon too. The hand cannon is my favorite. .. just happens that I haven't purchased one through vanguard yet, or gotten any legendary drops.

      • The Hand Cannon Mustard Rice is, in my opinion, unmatched in its killing potential in PvE. I run "The Devil You Know" (Vanguard Hand Cannon) when the going gets tough and that gun is tougher than any going I've come across yet! It has 12 rounds, faster reload attachment (which makes reload almost completely fill up the stat bar), and does about 1500 damage per critical hit against Vex in the VoG. Obviously your gear makes the biggest difference; I got pretty dang lucky with my best gear being Hand Cannon-based. I also hear that Lord High Fixer (Crucible Hand Cannon) is very good as well, but I stick with PvE most of the time so I have yet to get it. Hope this helps, and happy hunting!

        • In pvp weapon damage per shot is the same for weapons of the same type. However, weapon stability, range, and fire rate is not. Scout rifles would be excellent for their range and impact, but auto rifle users mostly use weapons that have the ability to "aim easier while being fired at" perk which negates scout rifle impact. The shingen, silvered hushwind, and some other exotic auto rifles have aiming perks with super high aim assist, very fast fire rate, nearly maxed out stability, and range at the half way mark. Before you break down your green and blue auto rifles look for the shingen and silvered hushwind and find one with both abilities of "move faster while aiming" and "aim easier under fire", then select the aim perk which maximizes "target acquisition." For PVE scout rifles are very viable, unless you are comparing it to the exotic auto rifle Xur had for sale last week that has scout rifle range, shoots super fast when hipped, better than auto scout rifle fire rate while aimed, max stability, and heals/does more damage on the last half of the clip. Some of these statements are opinion, but I do know for certain that my k/d on weapon kills for close quarters maps is much better with an auto than a scout. In the very big maps on clash I definitely opt for scout rifles. A reminder I use is if most of my fire fights are outside of extended grenade throwing range, use a scout. I apologize for being windy! p.s. if you are used to using a scout rifle I would try running with a sniper that has a fast aiming perk for the one head shot kill.

        • Grab the "devil you know" from the vanguard vendor, it will be one of the best decisions you will ever make. Good reload speed, high impact, 12 round clip, range nearing that of a scout rifle (with the range upgrade) and damage bonuses after kills, which stack. I've seen hit drops of over 1700 damage. Seriously.

        • Pulse Rifles are my cheddar. They fall neatly into the space between "full on CQB" Auto Rifles and "midrange dominance" Scout Rifles, offering some of the benefits of each with a few manageable flaws. Most Pulse Rifles have relatively small magazines - the number of rounds is high, but since they're used 3 at a time, it's generally around 7 to 10 shots per mag. However, several nice Pulse Rifles have the Field Scout option, which increases both magazine size and reserve rounds. This option is very worthy of consideration when it's available. I'm currently using a FWC Pulse Rifle called The Conduit, which has good ROF but low Impact; with Field Scout, it fires 14 bursts before reload (and it reloads fairly quickly even without booster gauntlets). Choosing options to boost Range and Stability with Pulse Rifles is also generally a good idea. PRs don't enjoy the range of Scouts (though some get surprisingly close, especially with perks), and the quick volley of 3 shots does make the barrel climb a little. Upgrading either will give you a weapon which can compare with low-end Scouts for range while still getting consistent crits with good aim. A good-ROF PR will also potentially best a Scout for DPS, if you can hold your targets. Some Pulse Rifles also come with a Full Auto option. I don't actually need this (tapping the trigger is easy enough) and recommend you pass it over in favor of more useful perks if it's in a stack. If it's a single affix, just take it; holding the trigger is one less thing to worry about in a hot firefight. But it's not mandatory for PRs to shine. In general, PRs give a versatile, mid/high-DPS short-midrange option that has snappier handling (faster swap and ADS) than Scouts, and faster reload than Hand Cannons. Autos and Hand Cannons are more potent with the right skill set, but PRs are great tools for people who aren't super skilled at shooters (like me). For this reason, they're my runaway favorite.

          • I absolutely LOVE scout rifles. I bought one from the Vanguard vendor (the name was just a bunch of letters and numbers), and headshots cause enemies to explode, creating splash damage. Every head-kill is like a grenade. I know everyone uses ARs for PvP, and a lot of people I know use them in PvE. AR's are certainly great weapons, but nothing feels as good as getting the headshots that create BOOM BOOM at the same time. I've been hoarding Ascendant Energy while I decide which gun I want to roll all the way to the top, and this one is at the top of my list.

          • Right now I'm using pulse rifles. I too was very fond of scouts while leveling up and would prefer that over anything else. Luck would have it that the only legendary primary I was revived through RNG was a pulse rifle. After getting used to it, I actually enjoy them. I enjoyed them enough to purchase red death from Xur last week. All around a solid gun (much more effective in CQC than a scout when you're unfortunate enough to get in that position), and happy with the purchase. Saving my coins (and hopefully banking RNG luck, cause it's coming in NO other form) for the exotic scout rifle though if it happens to pop up :)

            • I definitely prefer scout rifles in pve but will switch between different weapons depending on the situation. With how easy changing weapons is I don't see a reason to pigeon hole yourself.
