I got my first exotic armour today. I received it like my other legendary gear, through the cryptarch. I am level 8 with the cryptarch and each level up since maybe level 4 I have gotten legendary engrams through the postmaster. So keep sending engrams to the cryptarch to level him up. It's seems to be the only way to get legendary gear besides buying them.
