thoughts on the story (actual discussion, not whining)

So, I've played through the story a couple times, cuz hey, I actually liked it. I've typed up this little wrap-up of the races, their apparent motives, and what we do and don't know. Originally, this was a response to one of those halfwit haters who can't understand the concept of progressive storytelling, but I thought I'd just put it here for all to see, not just in a reply to jackass troll #4368752. Here we go... The Cabal are simply brutish imperialists, endlessly advancing and conquering worlds. The Grimoire says, "You could follow a trail of broken planets back to the Cabal homeworld (sic)". It seems that they don't much care for anything more than conquering for conquering's sake. They're just a warlike race, from what I know. The Fallen are scavengers. They go where there's loot to be had, from either abandoned warzones and cities, or by preying on what they think are weaker races. They do seem to be fighting the Hive a lot. This might be due to the Hive just being murderous of other species, or the Fallen trying to claim their land/treasures. The Hive are a more bestial, primal race. They have colonies like insects, and there's a lot of dimorphism. We don't know if they're all one species, or a collective of symbiotic species. This is left as a mystery, since they're the more horrific of the races. This is a common storytelling trope - not revealing too much info on the scary monsters - since people tend to be more afraid of things they don't understand. I'm sure we'll learn a lot more about them in The Dark Below. All we really know about them at this point is that they're closely related to The Darkness, and those wizards are dicks. The Vex is not really a race, but rather one consciousness spread across space and time. They work toward an end that is likely unfathomable to our characters, since we're just high-tech humans, and mechanical hive-minds probably have different wants or needs (if they even have wants or needs). We do know that they're trying to build a network across the solar system, perhaps even across the universe. The Vex also seem to be an imperial race, in regard to their attempts toward this goal. The Vex found the Darkness in The Black Garden (or maybe they built the garden around it), and saw it as a way to become more powerful, thus they supported it and protected it, in hopes for some of its power. Perhaps the Vex were even trying to control it. The Traveler is the enemy of The Darkness, which is why The Vex are at odds with it and humanity. The Darkness wants to extinguish all light and life from the universe. This is obviously bad news for all the races, which gives each race reason to fight against the Vex. That's why you see the Fallen and Cabal fighting them on Earth, Venus, and Mars. At the end of the story, we destroy the fragment of Darkness that had enveloped the shard of The Traveler, thus pushing back the Darkness (for the time being) and restoring The Traveler. And now the real fight begins. We've won the battle, but not the war. The Traveler is awoken, and The Vex and Hive will be fighting harder than ever to destroy it.

  • Ok, I can see a lot of the stuff you've got does make sense. I've had a running theory that I've been working on for a while. Starting with Cabal, a lot like you said, an imperialistic group of brutes that conquer or destroy other races, as shown by the Psions being a probable different species than the main Cabal forces. Now, while they have been conquering worlds, they still haven't exactly been left untouched. In the Grimoire, theres a ghost fragment that says the ghost overheard them talking about fleeing something. This could possibly be the Darkness. So they may also have lost their homeworld, and are trying to make up for it by creating a massive empire. Or they may be trying to protect their home by creating a huge buffer zone of planets that they can use to defend themselves and keep their homeworld safe for a while at least. The Fallen are the most interesting race to me. I think that they seem to be a race that was once actually a lot like mankind, and had been found by the Traveler. After they made contact with the Traveler, they reached an enlightened era that was the equivalent of the human golden age, which is why when you shoot them in the head, light spills out of their necks. They are also terrified of the Hive, who seem to be the Darkness' servants, and model their servitors after the Traveler in a sense. However, some sort of social or cultural upheaval happened, and they may have actually obliterated their own planet and destroyed their social structure, reducing them to marauding pirates and scavengers, who then follow in the Traveler's wake in order to try and gain its favor back, but costing them even more of their advancement and driving them further into their marauder lifestyle. The Hive are the servants of the Darkness. They seem to be polytheistic, with their gods "living" among them and guiding their society in between periods of dormancy. However, they have a god above all gods, which is the Darkness. The Darkness controls them and instructs them on what to do, which is why they hunt the Traveler and seek to extinguish light. They also might be able to corrupt other species, leading to the diversity of their forms, a lot like the zerg from StarCraft. But this worship of the darkness is why they have that growth that spreads wisps of darkness and why they worked to corrupt the Traveler using its fragment in one of the missions. The Vex are, and pardon the pun here but it seemed fitting, vexing to me. They seem to be incredible logical and trying to accomplish that great goal of all interstellar hyper intelligent robot races and wipe out all sentient life in the galaxy because of their irrational behavior and damaging effects on their surroundings. However, they also seem to have some other motives that revolve around whatever it is in the Garden. If I remember correctly, somewhere it says that they may have actually created that entity, either intentionally or through some accident. Either way, they didnt understand it, and couldn't comprehend its power, so they came to one logical conclusion: to worship it in order to attain its favor and power. My best guess is that whatever it is, it may be a fragment of the Darkness taking a physical form due to something the Vex did, thus creating a separate entity from the Darkness that the Hive worship. This entity drives them forward, much like the Hive, and pushes them towards galactic conquest and some hidden motive. These are my theories on the races at least.

      • My theory: the traveller is one of its race which is all dead except for it and the one that betrayed and killed its race: the darkness. Long ago the travelers where a mighty race that brought glory to all realms uplifting them to a higher standard. You see our traveller, which we will call "light" was the youngest of these beings, it ventured into a new galaxy where it found us. But in the travelers realm a dark threat grew. A traveller named oryx sought to rule the universe and to this end created a virus made to kill all travelers, oryx vaccinated himself against it but it twisted his body, resulting in his differing look. The virus wiped out all but one traveller in the galaxy. That one traveller was named ether, and he uplifted a factious race which we call the fallen. Oryx needed an army to conquer the fallen so he transformed the species he once guarded into the hive. He also used the remains of his dead brothers and sisters to create the vex. To this day the hive and vex worship him as a god. Oryx then sought to conquer ether and the fallen but was repulsed. Seeking an edge he aligned himself with the empires of a race known as the cabal. He then launched an attack that broke the fallen. Ether sacrificed itself to become the servitors and primes. Oryx tricked the fallen though, corrupting ethers shards to trick the fallen into thinking that the only way to revive ether was to take parts of our traveller, light. And so oryx and his hordes attacked earth, oryx was not able to wipe us out bit did steal a shard of light and used it to keep light from healing. Oryx then set out to conquer the galaxy of the travelers. He now returns to take our galaxy, crush his brother light, and take the universe as his own. That is where we are today.

      • For the various races, and their relations to us/eachother, i'e thought it out like this: Fallen House of Devils: They found the darkness and came to worship it, giving them power in exchange for servitude. this in turn drove them kinda crazy.... Fallen House of Kings: Vaguely Darkness-following, probably unintentional. Fallen House of Exiles: VERY Darkness-worshipping, kicked out by various other houses, turned to the Darkness on the moon for power. Fallen House of Winter: Enemies of the Darkness, seems to be most intact-seeming House, but fear and bad early contact has turned them against Humanity. Hive: Created/Corrupted by the Darkness as a servent race, Crota is a type of "Dark Prophet" and Oryx is their name for the Darkness. Vex: Found Darkness in the Black Garden, unable to defeat/ally it, they worshipped it as a god, realizing the boons it gave. Cabal: Warmongering, perhaps a Victim of the Darkness, expanding in an effort to keep their sociaty from collapsing in on itself.

        • I could go along with everything you've said thus far, although even with all of that the only real thing that peaked my interest in Destiny's story was the Exo Stranger she's the only character that I really want to know more about, I mean she's been watching us since the beginning of the game and if anything I do believe she has some connection to the speaker(I've heard him mumble something like "Shes a fool to try and take this all on her own") I could only imagine he was referring to her but then again I'm not sure. I really hope Bungie will elaborate much more on her story and possibly let us see her back story first hand. I really wouldn't mind doing a "Mission in the past" as the Exo stranger we all know the Exo's were war machines practically, one of the grimoire cards even mentions how a lot of Exo's are trying to recall their past so it wouldn't be too far fetched to think we might get something like that right?

the original writer left about 1 year before release....some random guy was brought in to write the g cards in an attempt to create a story only 7 months before release....i like that you attempted to solve some riddles and did a really good job in doing so but still an F for story by bungie. I really hope the DLC starts putting the pieces together.

            • If you break down everything we did in the story into words it's a journey worthy of beowolf. He would have looked at us and gone, "those guys are hard core." Lol I'm leveling a hunter and am going to pay more attention to the story. In the opening cut scene did anyone notice how many lines left earth? That might give us s hint at how many planets we'll visit.

            • After spending a few hours going through the grimoire ive unlocked im loving the story and different races! Love how the vex are basically living in different dimensions and can replicate human intellegence to the point where they can see our actions one step ahead of us! The grimoire would of been quality as audio logs in the game

              • I'm not the best writer, so I hope you can follow along, but I would have liked to see something like this for a back story The Traveler, yes I remember. It was created as a Beacon of hope for a race who's world was about to be destroyed, but it went so wrong. In the way it was created, it released a darkness unlike anything seen, corrupting every race it touched. At the point of its birth, a flash of sentience, it realized what had happened. Horrified at what it thought it had done it fled to the farthest corners of the universe. The Darkness gaining its own sentience knew that the only power in the universe strong enough to take it on was fleeing. It gathers its newly corrupted thralls and gave chase. After a thousand years, the Traveler came upon a small system of planets with a race called Humans. The arrival of the Traveler spurred on the advancement of this backwater species. They spread throughout their star system in a golden age of peace and exploration. Then the darkness came, drawn to the brilliant light of the Human race which only centuries ago was all but a flickering ember. The traveler terrified at the idea it's presents could lead to the death of another race fought back. Using its great strength it elevated humans to a new level of advancement to combat the Darkness. The were called the guardians, humans with super powerful abilities trained in skills to prepare them for the coming night. That night rolled over them like a raging storm. The Darkness's minions number in legions, it seemed like nothing could stop them. The golden age of mankind was scorched off the face of every world the humans touched. Cornered on their home world it all seemed lost. The Traveler knew what needed to be done and pressed himself in the idea there was no other choice. I do not remember what it did, but it was must have been amazing. The darkness itself was forced back into the black nothingness of space while its battle thralls were scattered, but it came at a terrible cost for the Traveler. Broken and beaten it looked upon the battlefield and saw its children, the guardians, had been wiped out. With the last of its energy it created little sparks from self, which we call ghost today. It knew the Darkness would return and he gave them a task. When the time is right they were to raise the Champions of old to fight the coming storm. Guardians never die.

              • I'm hoping so hard for some kind of revisit to the beginning missions with some story stuff filled in. I was really expecting to get sucked Into an amazing storyline. I know this game has the potential, they just need to make it happen. Thanks for taking the time to write this up!

              • This was a nice elaboration on the differences between the different factions. I just wish more of this was explained in game instead of having to find it on grimoire cards. I prefer games with a more cinematic experience than one that requires research to better understand.

              • I think the story is great... although I wish they had elaborated a little more. I honestly only started this game because there was a story mode. I'm not into guns and shooting and war and future space games online. My love is the whole fantasy genre single player thing. Elder Scrolls. Love it. But I started Destiny and love the gameplay and love the story missions. I wanted to keep playing more and more to find out why and what happens and just everything. So I can see why people are complaining about a weak storyline because I feel not all my questions are answered. But it makes me want to replay it to see what I missed. It makes me want to play more and it makes me impatient for future DLC. The potential is there. I can't wait to see where it goes!

              • I do see why people would hate the story. Because it's not exactly given to them. Think of it like Skyrim. You read books and stuff to find out more. Thats what Grimoire cards are for.
