Thoughts on Destiny Controversy from an Employee in the Industry -DONE-

I have deleted the original post contents. My goal was to inspire those who might be taking Destiny's faults to extreme levels to think a little bit more about the reasons why they may feel deceived. Only to receive too much trolling, disbelief and questioning my credibility into oblivion. I am enjoying the game thoroughly, and hope Bungie resolves many large quarrels with the game. Better itemization would be nice Better communication Better matchmaking Variety in missions These are my top complaints. It was interesting to say the least, to those that responded positively, and constructively, I thank you. Someone commented earlier who said it best what I was trying to convey: "While perhaps they have not phrased it sufficiently, we believe that the author is mainly objecting to the rampant hyperbole and vilification that permeates so much of the objection to the game. Destiny may not meet one's expectations and we firmly believe that everyone should be free to assess the games merits personally, but the constant bombardment of tirades marking Destiny as 'the worst game ever' or asserting that no one should like this game are both misleading and presumptuous. All these rabid screeds do is act as noise, drowning out the valid reasoned complaints."

  • So I have disposable income that I will not spend on another Bungie/Activision title/DLC. Got that Bungie? Activision? maybe if more understood the issue here and said: gee. I could use a tank of gas rather than some micromanaged hack title that disconnects and under-delivers. "..what really got me upset, was that I have to wait a FREAKING WEEK to get past 100VG that I earned!!! I earned that! That was my TIME! My Money! how dare you!!"

    • This game isn't bad nor is it good. We were promised better. A bait and switch from what was originally stated and content we thought we'd get to see after release remained closed. This is a legal problem that may form into a consumer lawsuit. I'm not against the way the game is currently, but they should release the currently unaccessible content missions and stuff each week till the release of the Expansions. Those Expansions should be unreleased content, such as new worlds to travel to like different invaded cities on Earth or other planets. I again state I love this game with a lot of but....

I did read your original message in a quote...I agree 100%, this game was made with love and attention to detail, it's far from perfect but actually is a drug, like Borderlands, like Mass Effect, like Dark Souls. I was banned in metacritic long, long time ago...and I am damn proud of it, I am done with idiots in search of their fifteen minutes of fame.

          • This game is only "bad" because of the hype. If they'd have marketed it as a FPS with elements from other games rather than a revolutionary open-world FPS game with epic story etc it wouldn't seem so bad. The fact is the game doesn't live up to the hype, it's not a bad game, it wears thin relatively quickly, but then again after the first couple times through Halo on legendary the multiplayer was all that mattered anyway. FPS always have limited replay value. TBH I liked the game, it's was fun, it'll still be fun for a bit with crucible and at least another couple times through the raid for me. That said, if the DLC only includes a few strikes an extra raid and a few story missions it's not going to be worth purchasing for me. They'd basically have to have half the content of the released game for it to be worth the amount they want. They're not going to care that I'm not purchasing it, so many people preordered the DLC that they won't be lacking for players, but I doubt I'll continue playing till December rolls around without significant additions in the meantime, which don't look forthcoming. (I'm not listing them here, there are plenty of other posts in the forum for that.)

Yeah, don't let the trolls get to you. Not everyone has to like the game and frankly, the hype machine overpromised. It is still a good game though and people saying it is "the worst game ever" are just being dumb. There are things I'd like to see changed (more story please!) but overall I've been having fun. EDIT: Somebody block quoted your original post below, good stuff. Everything has to be a "conspiracy" these days. Look, I'm all for game consumers standing up for themselves and not letting companies walk all over them. However, that is not happening here (ex. there are no microtransactions in this game and there easily could have been) and even if it was, you approach such things with a calm and reasonable attitude, not like a 10 year old.

            • All things considered there are an enormous amount of flaws in the game, but having seen Bungie make games all of my life I can't believe that they would just cut all of that content. They are extremely patient about creating games the community enjoy. If I'm going to blame anyone its Activision I mean look what they did to COD they whored it out for cash and they are going to try the same here while at the same time strangling Bungie

              •
I work as a game tester. I've worked on a few disc titles and many, many games on the Xbox Live Arcade and almost all of the digital launch titles for Xbox One. I also know someone who I used to work with, who does the same work at Bungie. I've worked through every milestone in a games development, I've seen how the product starts and how it ends, and often times, it ends up being completely different, with a lot of stuff cut, for good reasons. Now, I haven't worked on a game with a long as a life cycle as Destiny, but I'd like to share some thoughts following Destiny's release. Content gets cut, things get re-written. Things that the Dev's may have "promised" or said a year or two ago could easily change, and for good reasons. Maybe that content they said they could do didn't fit within the parameters of release, maybe it just didn't seem as fun as they had originally planned. People need to understand that there are dozens of variables that go into game development. Have you seen this game? It is completely and utterly contained with some of the highest attention to detail I've ever seen in a game. People spent hours, countless hours, working hard spending time away from their families and friends to build a universe for YOU, for YOU to enjoy. When you come out and say that this game sucks or rate this game at a 0, you are being completely and utterly evil, and mean, completely disrespectful and ignorant to what it takes to make something like this. This is a vision created by talented minds for you to enjoy, and for them to enjoy themselves. As gamers we need to take a little more time to consider what we say and do and appreciate that these developers spent millions of dollars and time to create a game for us that is much bigger than we all realize, for 60 dollars. 60 bucks. There is plenty of fun to be had here for 60 dollars. I've paid 60 dollars for incredibly worse games, INCREDIBLY worse. Now, that's not to say that the game isn't without its faults, there is no PERFECT game. Take pleasure in the notion that Bungie will support this game for many years to come, and your initial investment is one that will carry that investment into greater, more in depth experiences within Destiny. Give them some feedback about what isn't right about the game, I for one would like better voice communication and better itemization, and places to explore. If you don't like it, or feel betrayed that Bungie has somehow "lied" to you about the game or features, then move on or provide some real constructive feedback, or maybe pick up the game at a later date to see if any of the feedback has changed the game in a positive way. This attitude and conspiracies over a video game is just silly, immature, and your time is better spent on other things. I spent two weeks researching this game, listening to opinions, seeing the rage and insta-zero's on metacritic. While the game clearly has a few identity issues, there is no game on this planet that deserves a zero (With a few exceptions, of course). I've accepted Destiny's weaknesses and see the potential of it's glory. Give Bungie the benefit of the doubt, instead of the hate, and try to be more accepting and understanding of game developers. They are not slaves to your needs, rather, wizards for your imagination. EDIT: Let me make this clear, you are entitled to your opinion, I am simply communicating that better effort be spent in clear criticism rather than incessant whining and berating. EDIT: This guy gets me -
Quote from Poster - Recreant888: While perhaps they have not phrased it sufficiently, we believe that the author is mainly objecting to the rampant hyperbole and vilification that permeates so much of the objection to the game. Destiny may not meet one's expectations and we firmly believe that everyone should be free to assess the games merits personally, but the constant bombardment of tirades marking Destiny as 'the worst game ever' or asserting that no one should like this game are both misleading and presumptuous. All these rabid screeds do is act as noise, drowning out the valid reasoned complaints.

Translation : I don't care that Bungie and Activision slapped me to the ground, took my lunch money, and laughed while they walked away trouble free.

                        • "People spent hours, countless hours, working hard spending time away from their families and friends to build a universe for YOU, for YOU to enjoy." No, what they created was something for me to purchase. They created a product to sell to me. Part of their marketing was to show this game off at trade shows and conventions. What they do in the games industry is, honestly, no different than how the rest of the market operates. Movies, TV shows, even FILING CABINETS go through an almost identical process. R&D, production, marketing, release, sell-through. It's the same song and dance. I understand that you are sick of the noise and sick of the QQ that permeates these forums. Speaking as someone who is generally disappointed with the quality of this game (having no expectations going into it), I'm sick of it too, because it means that those who have legitimate complaints can not be heard. You quoted somebody who posted that in a very concise and respectful manner, but this whole, "Look what they did! Give them SOME credit!" argument needs to go away. Just like it's annoying to see constent crying about petty stuff, it's equally as annoying to try to discuss ways to make this game better to be responded to in a manner of, "QQ more skrub, get better," or "Quit your crying, they worked really hard and you're just a baby." What irks me the most is people who simply respond, "Just give it time." Why? Why should I have to wait to have a product delivered? This isn't a pre-order, I bought this game on the release date (and no, I didn't buy it at midnight, I bought it that afternoon) and there's an overall sense that this game is half-finished. While it's certainly interesting to get some little tidbits from the community about development, and that brings a lot of things that feel "missing" into focus, I can understand being upset at being told, "Here's what the game looks like!" and then getting a product that doesn't match what you were told. This speaks more to Bungie being very vocal when it suited them, and mum when it didn't. Rather than take some negative press and communicating with your devoted followers, Bungie AND Activision both took the road of, "They'll figure it out on launch day." I sympathize with the people who followed this game through and through because they were excited for it. They really wanted this world that these creators were going to give them, and instead of getting something that they were TOLD they were going to get, they got something that was very different. Hindsight is always 20/20, but maybe a few more "bad launches" will teach these companies that they need to bring a product forward that they are GOING to deliver, stay in communication with your community (we aren't stupid, and we understand that stuff gets cut), or shut up and simply release the game when it's time. You can't have your hype, change the game, and then eat up sales and expect people to just go, "Well I'm sure they tried REALLY, REALLY hard!". All this coming from a guy who works in video production. We underpromise and overdeliver because it cuts down the hype and allows our creativity to blow the customer away. This industry needs to go back to that.

I don't care...I really, really don't. The product sucks. Plain and simple. Bungie swindled millions of gamers out there for a game that just isn't fun. I bought the game and have played it once. I also played the beta. I have absolutely NO DESIRE to repeat the same, boring crap that I did already in the beta. Its just so so boring.

I see more people blindly defending the game's faults than I see people going above and beyond to ridicule the game into oblivion. Although both are far too prevalent. I wish the community could just find a middle ground. Like, the game is a 6-7/10. Not a personal 6-7/10 guys, I'm saying from a design standpoint it's a 6-7. Which is decent. But calling it a 1-2 and saying it's the worst game ever doesn't help at all. Neither does saying it's incredible and claiming things like the grimoires or PvE strike repetition are good design ideas. The few of us who actually try and be constructive with our criticism while also enjoying Destiny's great attributes get trolled into oblivion or succumb to the Destiny rage machine because, well, everyone else is being rude to us. Why is there so much hate?

                                1. Revamp story so it makes sense. Grimoires should not be main source of story lore as its fragmented and not in order. Should be a side note, not the main. A redo on the entire story would be nice, i dont think most people would mind having the option of redoing it as long as they do not lose their gear or levels. Till that comes out, they can raid, rep grind strikes, or crucible which is what they are basically doing now. 2. In game facilitation for communication. If players are LFG maybe those that are can get transported to a tower where there are lobbies (such as the basement and vip club area) divided into level specific zones where people can inspect gear and chat. Or atleast initiate in game chat. If a player is lfg, he should be tagged so he is easily identified, and group leaders should be able to inspect his gear. The player should be able to leave a small message on what group he is looking for and if he has a mic. Also give players the option of opting out of chat, not making no chat the default. Using psn to create groups is painful and people dont like random help me messages. With the lfg people looking to create groups or fill gaps can now choose among players as opposed to sifting through a bunch of messages not knowing peoples gear and levels. I had a guy message me saying hes level 26 when he was really level 22 which was only noticed after he joined session. Game needs a hangout area such as most auction houses in mmos where people can show off and inspect gear, hang out and socialize. That imo would be a great start to improving this game. After that work on npcs towns etc to deliver story and encourage exploration
Give Bungie the benefit of the doubt, instead of the hate, and try to be more accepting and understanding of game developers. They are not slaves to your needs, rather, wizards for your imagination.
Agree they are wizards for our imagination to thrive, and they did that very well in many regards. 10 year+ Bungie fan here. I like the game, as a whole, the shooting mechanics are great, the music is glorious, it is wonderfully beautiful, and a lot of fun to play. My only gripe was the story delivery. Being a sucker for immersion and good storytelling, I was looking for a more engaging start for the new franchise. The artists of Bungie spent countless hours to give us all those little details that make Bungie games what they are. The sunsets and sunrises from the tree at the Tower are more beautiful than in real life, little fishes in the Traveler's courtyard ponds, my weapon has tiny blue sparks as I run through the Tower, rainbows in waterfalls, locations that make you want to just sit down and enjoy the scenery, glorious music, and on and on... For some of us, story and characters are important too. No one in their right mind can defend the way this one was delivered. Some of the lines were downright atrocious and out of place. After finishing the story mode, I have no idea what's going on, who these people are, nor do I care. I wanted to get a hands on tutorial with Lord Shaxx and find out how he lost his horn, wanted to go on a mission with good looking Dead Orbit guy downstairs, he could have told me about the factions, why I should join his? Etc. I expected to be left on the edge of my seat before the next DLC or installment and that has not been the case. I'll play for the fun and all the things that turned out right in the game, but I'll miss the emotional connections Bungie gives us in their games. Those awe moments that just blow your mind are just not there. Don't tell me to wait, first impressions are what sets the tone when you first play a game. And don't mention those collectible cards, they are as exciting to read as a dictionary and not even in game. As I posted before, O'Donnell's music was my narrative. His musical tale said much more than any sentence uttered in the game. The few magical moments when I felt legendary happened with the music.

I can assure everyone that bungie doesn't care for people who fly off the handle and call people names. Their opinions are not even considered. If you really want devs to listen, you need to be a adult about your feedback. Tell them what you want without calling them names or insulting their game that THEY made. All that causes is anger towards you. When you post, think if you would respond to it if you were them.
