I don't get these posts. It was made plain as day the story would be told over time, through expansions, both paid and free (i.e., Queen's Wrath). The base game is just the first episode. The prologue. The Traveler has awoken, but our enemies are still thriving across the Solar System, if a bit weakened. We're 2 weeks into a 10-year story, told over 4 games with expansions to fill in the gaps. To say the story sucks is like reading the first chapter of a book and basing your opinion off that. You don't know the story.

  • See, I disagree with you. Take 'The Walking Dead' or 'The Wolf Among Us'. These are episodic games whose stories are told over time. However, each episode also has a distinct sub-plot that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. While there are hints of subplots throughout Destiny (the Black Garden being the best example, as it does actually have a beginning, a middle, and an end), very few of them are actually pursued. The issue with episodes is that the episode itself should build the action. The best instance of this I can think is the Rasputin storyline, where at the end of the Last Array, the Ghost reveals that Rasputin is still around and communicating throughout the solar system. And then we show up on the moon, without explanation why we're there - why move off to the moon without another further mention of Rasputin? There's no need (in what I'll call Act I, which was Destiny at launch) to reveal Rasputin, but linking together the story elements to create a cohesive rise and fall of action is what creates an actual plot, and Destiny failed to achieve that, until the Black Garden storyline - which it concluded. So, if what you're saying is correct, Destiny is like getting half an episode of The Walking Dead, and having to wait for the other half in DLCs. And even worse, we seem to have received half of other episodes, which don't make a whole lot of sense without more background and development of the story.

  • What is this? Well-reasoned arguments that don't devolve into insults?! Thanks for that. You do make some good points. I'm really curious about what's going on with Rasputin myself. I do like the cliffhanger aspect of it, but part of me felt sort of "Wait, that's it?" at the conclusion of the in-game story. Hopefully we'll all by blown away by the coming expansions. I'm having so much fun with the gameplay though, that I can forgive a meh story.

  • I'm more a pretty casual player, I don't have a ton of time to dump into the game for PVP and such, so I focus on the story pretty strongly. Destiny easily has some of the best mechanics of any game I've played recently, but the thing that I really enjoy in the game is sorely lacking. It's hard for me to forgive that. For me, Shadows of Mordor looks like the answer until Destiny's able to tell a more coherent story arc, though I'll definitely come back and play it some once it's better fleshed out.

Thats exactly why I'm making this, I said in the comments that I agree with expansions for an MMO style game thats going to last so long, I know exactly where you're coming from and surprisingly I do agree with you. BUT destiny, being the "first chapter" that cost people 80-90 dollars or more, has little to no story and they're packing the story into expansions, -blam!-. that. The full game should have given a HELL of a lot more story and dialogue than that, the fact people are okay with buying "dlc" that costs like 20 dollars each to play some of the story is just bullshit and a moneygrab, I'm all for expansions in this, but not if their going to -blam!- over the consumers and their fans. Not everyone is made of money, thats why people are making "these posts". My point being through my post and this comment, is the retail version of the game should have at least had good dialogue and story. Thats why I'm disappointed but do I like the game? -blam!- yes, its a good game ... if you love repetitive games, and the raids are VERY fun, but like I said, its disappointing. I'm not an idiot, I think of things like this from every point of view, I analyse I don't just think for myself, But none the less I agree with you to some degree because what youre saying is true, despite the fact I already knew this, now I'm just hoping the free DLC ends up being good for the story.

  • Yea, I understand your points. The base game did have some disappointing dialogue. Dinklebot's lines were a bit too deadpan. It didn't really seem like he knew what his lines meant half the time.

No one has a clue on where the story is going next. No one can give their opinion on an entire franchise based off a sliver of the game. It's getting out of hand with the complaints. If you're going to complain, that's fine, just have something original to say.
