Not enough speed/handling differences to do so.
It wouldn't be a real race it'd be follow the leader.

I understand that the game just got released and could use some work, but I just think this would be a great feature for the future.

Bungie can adjust that a little bit (add more/less responsiveness to certain conditions etc.)

That would require then to reprogram sparrows, things like unlimited boosting, strafing, near perfect handling, would all need to be changed. And if people are so much enjoying sparrows why change them so much to add a game mode that requires a completely different kind of balancing from what this game already is. The sparrows are currently great for a shooter, getting from a to b. And this is a shooter. Don't fix what ain't broke.

What we like would mostly still be there but they wouldn't need to change all of that if they made "exceptions" for the race version which I see as being in the crucible not the open world which means they could simply use Pikes or alter sparrows to either add guns or small arms weapons fire-able from them in some way. Think Mario Cart or Twisted Metal

It's about being more than just a shooter, though. Also, the changes needed are actually quite few. Main propulsion/acceleration would have to be handled solely by the left analog stick and Boost would have to be changed to continually deplete until released or the gauge is empty. There are already advanced Sparrows with other functions that would allow for more intense race maneuvers, so it's less of an issue about why, but why not already?
