Don't forget crucible armor and weapons! Also there's vanguard and faction gear, so your gear building won't be heavily depended on chance engrams.

I actually completely agree with you, I've scored mvp a lot of the times but I don't notice any difference in the rate of acquiring special items. I think there should be a slight bonus for people that score high so we can keep everyone happy!
