Destiny story is...

Lacking big time. It's not as bad as titanfall as at least you're aware there is a story there but there is very little information in the game world. The narrative of the story missions often leave me wanting more and the ghost dialogue lines are very bland and boring. Peter Dinkalbot lines are forgettable. Even in borderlands the little robot friend is interesting. You don't interact with any npc's except vendors and there is not reason for my gaurdian to be searching for loot or the vault of glass. At least in borderlands you understand you are treasure hunters. Bungie needs to do better making the world more engaging and immersive. I like the game but want more story and immersion.

    • I have no problem with the story, as it relates to enemies, places, etc being thin and unfolding over the next ten years. That only makes sense, both from the perspective of Bungie wanting to pace themselves and the story, and from the perspective of you being newly awoken and the loss of information in the Collapse. I also am "ok" with the Grimoir distribution, although I'd much prefer a different, in-game distribution of the information, or at the least a better web format (quicker). My actual primary issue is the seeming lack of information on things that should be immediately apparent, and the already seeming inconsistencies, contradictions, and plot holes that have appeared - and I'm only at the start of Venus. Halo took several releases of games and books to get to the point where this started to be a problem, Destiny seems to be already there. Examples . . . am I the first Guardian in recent memory to be revived? One of several? The first of several/many? Or has this "revival" been going on for a while now and I'm just the most recent? We've got the Vanguard Guardian mentors in the city, so they've been there a while. But if all these Guardians have been running around for a while now, why didn't we know about Venus, the Reef, etc? These are things that should be known as soon as you get to the city and have talked to the Vanguards. Because there is talk of the golden age, then the darkening or whatever, a long "bad period", and now Guardians are going out again. At various places in the game and the grimoirs, I've seen mention of "1000s of guardians protecting the city", periods of no guardians, and then a recent "ghosts finding and reviving guardians" - and when each is set timewise isn't clear to me. I think where it really started bothering me was the story at the start of Venus. We just "re-discover" Venus (I've played it a couple times now, and the ghost clearly states the city/tower thought Venus was completely lost and the ruins are a surprise to him - adding to my above confusion about Guardians and when/where/what they've been doing). A few minutes later, robot hunter girl shows up and says go find the Black Garden. Floating Ghost suddenly knows about it (despite Venus being lost to us, from his previous comment, for 100s of years?), and knows we need to go to the Reef to find out more about it. Then we get to the Reef, and he responds when asked he has no idea what we'll find there. So we were standing one place we didn't know about before, but we knew to go another place we know nothing about to find out more about the first place we knew nothing about? And then to add insult to injury the Grimoirs say that the reason you can play as an Awoken is some have come back to earth, live there with us, and become Guardians - which says to me we should have at least some idea of what to find if we fly out to the Reef. And there is at least a limited transit/trade between the two. As a friend said, it feels like the various components were developed in isolation without a good overall story architect to make sure it all has cohesion.

              • Hopefully the link works........but read this and have your mind blown! (Sorry for any Sheldons out there (Big Bang Theory)). This story madee totally rethink the story of the game and got me really excited about what could possibly happen. Is the Traveler really a good guy or someone/thing we should be fighting to save?

                • While I hate the "Look at the Grimoire" excuse, it would be kind of neat if they added a library to the tower where you could read the cards. It's really kind of silly that you have to go to Bungie's site or use their app to view the card library, though overall I don't feel it adds much to the main lore, it just gives you some nice tidbits about things. It still doesn't tell you anything about how or why the Traveler came and/or what the darkness is and how the Traveler was nearly destroyed. If I'm supposed to believe some giant black mass of crap floating on the other side of the galaxy is somehow responsible for bringing down the Traveler and we don't get any explanation, I'm sorry but that's just BS.

                    • Why does no one understand that this was only an introduction to the world of destiny? If Bungie laid everything out at the beginning, what fun would there be in running through the game? There is more story to come, along with new weapons, armors, and multiplayer maps in future dlc's. It's already been confirmed

saying there is no backstory or anything is a completely invalid point. ffs people. what do you think grimoire is?? its not just a score, heres a small taste from the amazing story i have aquired.. Something hit us. Killed our Golden Age. Nearly wiped us out. Only the Traveler saved us, and at a shattering cost. The Speaker tells of a cosmic force that swept over us and caused the Collapse. Legend calls it the Darkness, the Traveler's ancient enemy, which hunted it across space. All we have left are questions. Centuries of debate gave birth to competing arguments on the nature of the Darkness and the Collapse. The Pujari Position describes the Darkness as a force with both physical and moral presence, an actualization of evil. Pujari art depicts the Darkness as a great storm, or as a change in conduct, a corruption that emerged from within and poisoned the Golden Age. Saint-14's Position argues that the Darkness was an invading armada, an alien force of incredible - but tangible - power. Some adherents believe that this armada sprang from species rejected or discarded by the Traveler for their sins. Ulan-Tan's Thesis considers the Darkness a necessary symmetry to the Traveler in a cosmic balance. In this view, the Traveler's goodness led it to sacrifice for others, and it is up to us to return this goodness by healing the Traveler. The Monist Position, or the Deflationary Position, considers the Darkness as a technologically sophisticated force, perhaps a post-Singularity intelligence. Adherents invoke information theory or contend that the universe is a simulation, allowing advanced intelligence to gain weakly acausal powers by bending the rules. The Acataleptic Clause claims that we are intrinsically unable to understand the Darkness. In many respects this belief parallels the Praxic Creed, which suggests that we should stop worrying about the nature of the Darkness and focus on resisting and defeating it. Certain positions - often labeled heretical - imply that the Traveler itself triggered the Collapse, or that it knew the Darkness was coming for it and hoped to use the Solar System as a sacrifice or a proxy army. The Binary Star cult is one notable example. --------------------------------------------------------------- Guardians are warriors forged in the Traveler's Light, a final hope in a universe falling into Darkness. Chosen from the dead by the Traveler's Ghosts, Guardians are those rare few able to wield the Light as a weapon. For centuries they have defended the City. But that defense cannot hold forever. Now, with the Darkness rising again, the time has come to retake our lost worlds. The Guardians who lead the way will save humanity - and become legend. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord of worlds, massive Jupiter and its moons must have been a cornerstone of Golden Age civilization. But the nature and extent of human presence there is now unknown. Old records refer to cities in ice and world-spanning oceans, but perhaps this is only poetry. The City's ships have rarely attempted any journey to Jupiter or beyond.

There's sill a lot of crap to do in it just keep getting armor with better light on it and getting to a higher level. Still a lot of stuff to do plus the expansion packs r coming out and the iron banner is still coming out too.

                                      • Bungie said that they will release more of the story over time in free content updates. (there are two expansions but those are separate from the free added content. NOT dlc.) If you listen to dialogue in the campaign and from different npc's in the tower you will hear a LOT of hints of what we can expect to see later. examples: SPOILERS What did the Vex do to mercury? What is its current state? Who is Osirus (other then one of the factions that was announced before launch.) and what "tempted them" before? (walk past the warlock vanguard and she says to someone "No, that is what tempted the osirus." ) What are the vex? Where and when did they come from? what is their goal? How do they turn entire planets into "machines?" What driven the Fallen to be scavangers? Why the division into houses? Did we kill the darkness or just slow it down? Who is the Stranger? She said she was not forged in light and "we must all choose a side. . . even if its the wrong one." Which did she choose? was she forced into servitude by the darkness and is she trying to redeem herself? WE KNOW NOTHING!!! The Awoken queen clearly wanted to test our resolve when we taken down the gate lord. What does she expect in return for the assistance she provided getting into the black garden? (COMING SOON, CHECK LATEST EVENT UPDATE.) How does she have fallen body guards? What other worlds have the Hive hollowed out? Who was their "God" from the shrine of Oryx? Oryx himself? will we have to face him? does he work for the Darkness itself? ALL these questions and more will be answered over time as they expand the campaign. Now, true they should have included a LOT more on launch because first impressions are lasting impressions, but for those with the game now should at least acknowledge that bungie WILL add more to the story FREELY and within months the game will have grown SIGNIFICANTLY.
