Don't people play for fun anymore?

I remembered why I started playing video games, it was a way to escape into a fantasy world for hours on end that provided entertainment and just fun. These days, it seems like everyone has forgotten what the simple purpose of video games are; Destiny being no exception. It seems whether it's PVP or even PVE; players have gotten so serious about playing. Now don't get me wrong, when engaging an enemy, of course everyone wants to win, but even if you lose, it should have been fun just to try, especially when facing off an enemy with allies at your side. Sigh...maybe I am just sentimental and I probably will get heat for this post, but....I really want to know....do any of you players...just play to have fun...win or lose...just the adventure itself makes you happy? Hi everyone, first off I would just like to thank all of you for commenting on the post. Even if you have different opinions, it's absolutely fine because you are more than entitled to it. I was just happy to read that so many of you still believe in the basic fundamentals of fun, and even though some of you have carved out your own definitions of the word and what it means to you, I sincerely hope that you truly enjoy your gaming experiences, whether its with Destiny or any other game you might play. Thank you for reading, and SHINE ON ;)

    • Nobody plays for fun... It's always to hit endgame and kill other people

      • I play for fun and have been playing games since the Commadore Vic 20 :) but I am stubborn. A boss may kill me or my team a 100 times but I will still go back until he is dead and do the female version of a teabag in victory before dancing. I also do silly things such as turning the corner wrong and doing a 'Dukes of Hazzards' off the cliff etc. I do not mind at all reviving people, even if they are not on my fireteam and I do not mind if you are a rubbish shot. I am a team-player and will support the team as best I can. Ok this is on Destiny but I am the same in other games as well. I, like others, have quite a bit of stress in life so gaming is a great way to let of steam :)

        • Fun ? why yes I have loads of it. Don't get mad if I am on your team and I Point at the last Fallen alive before I kill him and tea bag him. I am just weird like that, but rest assured that I am having a blast and laughing at my own exploits.

        • I think that's what some people consider to be "casual". Apparently people like a good "challenge" and sometimes us Casuals just feel like those challenges are a bit much on the "annoying waste of time" side. So yeah, I completely agree with you.. I play games to have fun, and to relieve stress. I don't like treating games like another job, and I don't like games that will make me stress too hard, or force me to do something I don't want to do. I play games for fun, I'm right there with you.

        • Most of the time I'm not too competitive, but I certainly do still try. And if we're doing something like a raid... it's time to bring out the sweatbands and Gatorade, because I'll be going hard.

        • Fair play and enjoyment is a lost art unless you stick yourself into a game like Skyrim, Resistance or Mario. The newer generation of gamer is set by achievements and very little direction and the comfort of a home console not having to leave the house to drop quarters into arcade machine. Honestly the last PvP game I played was Half Life and yeah I sucked at it and hell, if you have seen my handle I still suck at it. I have fun regardless of the out come and, myself like most gamers: cuss, spit and swear/ congratulate the other player. I have heard other gamers lose their fricking mind like someone just shot their favorite dog. Win or lose it fantasy regardless and in some case very stress relieving because we all know you shot some or blow up cars/ buildings in real life your next goal is trying to avoid Bubba in D-Block. To the root of it question: Regardless the outcome win or lose, I enjoy the adventure I have in the modern day fantasy land of gaming.

        • Yes, yes and yes. I'm a bit older than probably most gamers. I rarely play PVP and have spent less than 30 minutes in the Crucible. I don't knick PVP it just doesn't appeal to me. Being rooted in Gears of War and Halo I find that even when playing with friends it's almost impossible to get folks to work as a team and instead everyone runs around guns blazing. It becomes nothing more than a Kills to Death ratio statistic and very few actually care about enjoying the game. That all is fine and I certainly don't want to sound like I find fault in how others choose to play the games. Just pointing out what doesn't appeal to me. Why this is such a problem is that game developers have started to leave out those of us that prefer single player (or co-op) campaigns with a real story that's involving. Finally, I have been playing a lot of Destiny on my PS4 and Xbox One and I'm starting to believe it's about as close to perfect as can be found in the current gaming world. Too many games have the "level up" and role play elements that have little or nothing to do with your ability to actually function in the game. Not true with Destiny. Try running around in the wrong place on the wrong planet with a level that is too low and equipment that's not upgraded and die die die. Love it.

        • Look at it this way...ppl trashing destiny are a very small minority and their opinions wont make a dent to the games reputation to come. These ppl who get worked up about how they cant enjoy a decent game, should reassess themselves in life and find other ways to get enjoyment out of something. Either way they will stop whining and drop off, leaving the game to be played by those who genuinely enjoy it for what it is without derailed expectations.

        • I agree with you entirely. I play purely to have fun and get whisked away into a new world that the story writers have made and all it seems like now is a lot of people no longer play games like this and instead bitch whin and troll. At least there are a bunch of true gamers left around the world to look at it the way it was meant to be seen.

          • Well, I don't really know anyone, so I generally solo it because that's just the way it is. The two times I did Fireteam (during the beta), the others had a poor habit of running into the next area while I was either looking around and exploring or doing that very thing and in the middle of a loot cache I had just found and being teleported away from the area. I mean really, is it such an issue to ask "Ready to go/Next area?" I think if people are playing for fun, they generally will not rage out while killed or not mind wandering around and exploring for loot (or both, like me). I mean, unless I'm being practically spam-murdered by some ridiculous thing, I'm not going to freak out. Or atleast that much.<_< Plus the ones that are playing for fun are generally less dickish. = l

I agree 100% with what you are saying. At the end of this all. The game is there for pure enjoyment. Not to be taken so seriously. Some will, but it's just their nature. I'm a competitive person, and so are millions of other people, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the game at the same time. Some folks take the game way too harsh. The whole K/D thing and all that really doesn't matter. But for some, it's everything. Back in the old Halo days, we didn't even have a K/D ratio to keep track of. That being said. don't be so serious! It's JUST a game!

            • Yep, I play for fun. I generally avoid leisure activities I don't enjoy. Not a new concept for certain. I highly recommend utilizing free time in this way. If you aren't enjoying something that fills the little time you have to relax in a normal day, try something new.

            • I try to play for fun but on most games that just doesn't work. I am an Achievement Hunter and I find myself getting annoyed easily at a lot of games and just wanting them to be done. However with this game and other games with this style I actually have a lot of fun just playing the game with my friends. Destiny is a great for tons of fun.

            • Your definition of "fun" compared to my definition of the same term are completely different. I don't need to escape to some fantasy world, or whichever reason people choose to play a game. I like getting armor and weapons then dominating people in PvP. If it happens to ruin someones day or make them rage, then even better. It's a game, and if you live long enough you will realize that it is fleeting and will not last forever. Enjoy the "fantasy" until it is lost to time.

              • Yep, like most of the others, I play for fun as well. I've only played 3 games in the crucible but will have to play more to advance as I just finished the campaign story line. I could care less about my k/d ratio, which if you look at it you could see why!! I play to escape and that's pretty much it. Cheers

              • I play games for fun. I don't play multiplayer games much. Destiny being the exception. When i play a game, i look at things like level design, lighting and other small details that i appreciate. Most of the people i know look at a game and say "good graphics" because thats all they see. I enjoy the whole experience a game can offer. In destiny, i like the fact that you can play together helping other players and also rely on others to help you through a tough level.

This. Totally agree. All I see are links about grinding and levelling up as fast as possible. I work all day and when I do get to play I want to experience the game. I don't want to whore myself out to get to level 20-whatever!

              • I play for fun. The loot, challenges (like the daily heroic story missions, weekly heroic strikes, bounties, etc.) are just icing on the cake and just more reason for me to play. Destiny is one hell of a fun game and that's why I'm enjoying it so much, as well as many others.
