Very well done. The only conjecture I'd not agree with is sleep. I think the Exo would certainly sleep as we do, but for them it's far more about mental rest and psychological maintenance (much like we do in DMT-regulated REM states) than with physical recuperation. I'm also not quite sure you've given enough thought as to the sexuality portion of your analysis, as mechanically-assisted pleasure is something women have been keen on for centuries. However, the reproduction issue does stand. I hope to explore all these issues and more in a fictional work I'll begin after I complete the story portion of the game. I hope you'll follow me on this forum and keep and eye out for it. EDIT: I just recalled that there was a class item (a hunter's cloak, I believe) that depicted an algorithm given to the Exo by the Traveler and granting them sentience. The wording of the item (which I can't seem to find on the internet) makes me believe that Exo were granted sentience BEFORE the collapse. I'll continue to look for this item for you so we can discuss.

The Grimoire card for the Exo states that they're "self-aware war machines developed by humanity during the Golden Age for a long forgotten war, with the sole purpose of protecting their creators." It goes on to say, "Whoever built the Exos fashioned them in humanity's image, gifting them with diversity of mind and body." That the actual creators origins are a mystery is perplexing. Maybe it's the same individual that created the Warmind, Rasputin. The one thing we do know is that this creator granted them diversity of mind and body. I think their sentience was present before the Traveler.

  • To me, "long-forgotten war" does not mean The Collapse. A very striking difference.

  • Yeah, "during the golden age" would indicate it was before the collapse. :)

  • So it stands to reason that it was either a gift from the Traveler, emergent, or both. I'd put money on the Traveler sparking it off and it growing on its own. Meaning, the ability for Exo to gain sentience was present but it was not assured. Perhaps something in the Exo needed to make that last push.

  • Yes, I was leaning towards the Traveler having a hand in their awakening. I'm curious to know if the malignant nature of the Darkness is what prompted the Exo creation. Maybe the first encounters humanity ever had with the Darkness were part of this long forgotten war.

  • That's a good guess. If you look at what pre-Traveler tech looked like upon discovery, it was about what we have now. One would imagine the Exo were built to combat the first Darkness incursions.
