Please just use Borderlands 2 elemental effects, if elemental weapons do a negligible amount of bonus damage to a very few amount of enemies that simply just is not enough incentive to care at all. If my solar weapon never lights anything on fire and my arc weapon never shocks or stuns anyone then it's a waste of an amazing feature that is correctly implemented in countless other games to add an amazing new dimension to weapon possibilities and drastically increase the enjoyment of overall gameplay. I would be disappointed if the current model of "elemental" damage still remains when I pick up destiny on the 9th.

  • I doubt that'll happen. Besides, the borderlands element system did have it's flaws. If you were going up against a certain enemy, you'd have no choice but to use the elemental type they were weak against. If that were in Destiny, I'd end up getting a really cool exotic, but since it had elemental damage, it would only be useful vs one type of enemy. Bungie's way allows for the player to use whatever weapon they want against any enemy, with only shielded ones requiring an elemental type to effectively be taken down.

  •
Please just use Borderlands 2 elemental effects
Just the effects, right now elemental weapons suck , a 10% bonus to damage against like 10% of enemies is a sad missuse of the elemental weapon system. In a perfect world every bullet fired would have a chance(like 3%) to have a status effect such as electrocution(Stun or chain lighting to other people) or igniting enemies( a simple DoT). Then you would have a tangible incentive to acquire the element you want, as well as adding a cool new feature into the game that makes gunplay and firefights that more dynamic and engaging.

  • What about them sucks? As long as an enemy doesn't have a shield, they're just as effective as kinetic weapons. You don't sacrifice anything to use an elemental weapon. All that element means is that it's going to deal increased damage against shields that are weak to it, and decreased damage to shields that aren't. One of the problems that I found infuriating in Borderlands was the fact that I could never find any weapons I could actually use as my main weapon for a certain situation. I had to have like 3 different smgs on me just to make sure I was prepared for everything. In Destiny's case, you have much more flexibility, while still having cool guns that shoot fire and electricity. Take Thorn for example. If I just got Thorn, I'd want to use the shit out of it. Not just while leveling, but all the time, it's one of the best if not THE best hand cannon in the game. Thorn, however, deals void damage, and you cant get any other damage type on it. That weapon would become about 75% less useful if it was only effective against one enemy type, and significantly less effective vs the others. With Destiny's system, Thorn will deal equal damage to all enemies, but when I encounter one with a shield, it will deal decreased damage unless that shield is weak against void damage. With that system, I can now have Thorn equipped at all times without every worrying about which enemies I face. The element system is not meant to be super complex in Destiny. It's meant to allow weapons to be slightly more effective in certain situations, while still being useful in all others, AND while still having the cool death animations. This game is meant to be rewarding, not a hassle.
That weapon would become about 75% less useful if it was only effective against one enemy type
Jesus, where did I say I wanted elements to only be effective against one kind of enemy anywhere in any post above....... I clearly said and even quoted above JUST THE STATUS EFFECTS In their system Thorn doesn't really have any "real" element, there's a void symbol on the HUD and it does slightly more damage versus shields of a certain type, In my scenario it would do the exact same thing to shields, and not be weak to anything just like in the current system. In addition it would have a chance to have a special effect like some kind of void explosion or something some of the time.

  • Well there are status effects. Anyone who's looked at the gunslinger and sunsinger subclasses would know that both melee abilities and grenades can be altered to ignite enemies, dealing damage over time. There are status effects, but they aren't as prominent as you'd want them to be. If they were, they'd have to completely redo a few of the subclasses because they'd provide bonuses that didn't even give a bonus. Status effects are reserved for special occasions. Remember, solar bullets aren't gonna be filled with gasoline, they're going to be filled with light, which has a slightly different property than the other types of light. Sorry if I am making you angry but this topic isn't about entirely overhauling the element system, its about making a slight change. Also, 3 of the elements in borderlands all did the same thing anyway, they added a lingering damage over time status effect. The only difference was how their effectiveness vs certain enemies. Slag was the only one that did anything different.

Melee abilities and grenades are obviously not guns in any logically conceivable way. There are no status effects on any regular gun at all, I just wanted to voice my opinion that the elemental system in my opinion is broken and useless, and that your changes would do literally nothing but change the triangle of effectiveness. I see you think its fine and dandy for it to have so little impact and thats cool, whatever floats your boat. Im not wasting any more of my time trying to explain logically that your post and it's idea would do nothing for the community whatsoever but further complicate a broken system. Good day to you.
