From what I could figure out, higher level baddies had a higher chance of dropping a better rarity engrams What item your engram is, is determined at the time of identification and the higher your cryptarch level the higher your chance for getting better quality items. You can literally put all your cryptarch items between your characters in the vault and only have them identified using your main. Not only will the items come out as your main's class instead of its origin, but if your main has high cryptarch it has a better chance of being good. If your main character level is higher, the item will be a higher level too. This leaves a pretty big exploit for item mining, but I'm not complaining because pve is already severely gimped compared to pvp drops and leveling speed.

  • Interesting exploit. I know that Cryptarch level is increased by purchasing (more glimmer spent = increased Cryptarch level). I think it also increases when you decrypt engrams, yes? So you could have one of your guardians be the "designated decrypter". Only problem is that the class-specific engrams need to be collected by the same class of Guardian.

  • There are no class specific engrams, they all become class specified in conjunction with the character decrypting the engram. Example: You have a class item engram in your vault. If a hunter decrypts it, it will become a cape. If a warlock decrypts it, it will become a bond
