So in the beta I noticed that your last node in the subclass skill tree, is to lock it. What is the purpose of this? Does anyone think there's a benefit to it? Same goes for the weapon skill/perk tree.

Forces commitment.

Eventhough this thread wasn't officially a question, i'm gonna declare it answered by user DawnBlue:
Destiny allows you to freely swap your ability choices, but according to Green there comes a point when you can lock them in. This gives your Guardian benefits, such as a stat boost. At this point you get a copy of the same focus, but that copy levels up much faster, thus allowing experimentation.
Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-04-30-how-destiny-turns-into-diablo-when-you-hit-the-level-cap

You get a bonus stat from doing so.

The video of the lv 29 titan has a red death that he has the first ability lock & I'd be guessing it gives a buff to the ability on the gun

Just finally found the OFFICIAL source for what locking does.
Destiny allows you to freely swap your ability choices, but according to Green there comes a point when you can lock them in. So the info came from Bungie before they were even called Subclasses
-
Exactly what I was wondering.
-
To me it makes sense but I would like some kind of option, taxing but an option nonetheless, to be available to undo the lock if needed. For example: I was planning to lock Defender as my PVE sub and Striker as my PVP sub but maybe things shift around and enemies work differently between the two, i'd be happy to know there is an emergency option. For now, on release that is, I'll have to keep them open and use them according to situations or making them both neutral builds to be used anytime anywhere and locking both as just that.
-
it thought that the lock skill was a final powerup, so when you are confident in your character build you finalize it. And to answer the question, yes these skills have a benefit, your character will never be the best it can be if you dont commit to it
-
It forces you to commit to a play style and rewards you for it. Sounds good to me.

Edited by DawnBlue: 8/3/2014 4:04:13 PMYou get a new copy of the Subclass to level up; you can then easily swap between builds without changing all the skills. There's also the stat bonus you get, so I could see people making an "end-game" build with the best setup for tackling the hardest content which has the stat bonus in it and having an open build for the same Subclass for anything else Source:
Destiny allows you to freely swap your ability choices, but according to Green there comes a point when you can lock them in. You get added bonuses to your stats and another class option unlocks which gains experience faster than the normal rate for that character. You dont use another character slot.
-
Locking your skill tree gives you a massive boost in one stat. However, it seems that certain Exotic items can grant you abilities from your skill tree, even if you don't have them selected. I would not want to lock my skill tree unless I'm sure that my equipment compliments my skill tree appropriately.
-
This has been stated weeks ago.It boosts stats
-
For armor it provides an increase to armor. weapons get a damage boost. and each of the classes get their main stat a boost (warlocks get more recovery, titans more fitness/armor, and hunters more agility) plus after locking in a subclass you would be granted another coppy of the subclass to level again, allowing you to make several builds with the added stat bonuses.
-
My guess is, you have to lock your tree to unlock your next subclass. just a thought though.
-
I believe locking it gives an added bonus to one of your 3 attributes but, considering that challenges will vary and you want to have the 'best fit' within your team doing Raids, etc, I don't see much value in locking your subclass.
-
When u lock your skill tree it increases the effectiveness of all of them. At least that's what I get out of wat I've heard. I could be wrong
-
In answer to the original question, it is because some pikey will steal it otherwise....they are everywhere....
-
Boost your stats even further. Will probably be necessary when people start min and maxing in this game.
-
makes gun better its pretty easy for some guns where the upgrades make them worse, like rocket launchers that have an ammo that lowers all the stats and raises stability lol, who needs less recoil on a rocket launcher?
-
Once you lock it your stats upgrade. Which one depends on class.
-
It gives you the added bonus like armor or recovery. Then it gives you a new one of the same that levels faster than the one before.
