Centipede update: How I got mine to work!

Skip to HOW TO DO below if you don't want to read this. Also note that I did this using a mac running OS X Mavericks. I'm sure it's possible on PC, and I will try to write a guide to that if I can figure it out on my PC. EDIT: I figured out how to do it on windows 7 and added a section for that. EDIT: Added formatting. ~~~~~~~~~~ Okay, to everyone having issues with centipede. I have been researching this all morning using a proxy and it does seem to be some kind of connection issue between Bungie and some networks. There is a handshake that is failing. I don't know why, but my guess is that your network is denying that handshake from happening due to security issues (what these are and why they're coming from Bungie's cdn.deadorbit.net is beyond me). I speculate all of this because I finally got my VPN up and running and magically Destiny is now working through the VPN. For those of you who don't know, a VPN is a virtual private network. They're usually used to send secure data, such as bank account information, over an otherwise less secure network. What's happening (I think) is that your network does not trust something in the network-Bungie handshake and is denying service on the cdn.deadorbit.net request. By applying a VPN you are metaphorically "securely handshaking." ~~~~~~~~~~ HOW TO DO (OS X): 1.) You need a VPN. Most college campuses provide one. Mine does and I didn't even know about it. Try googling your campus and then VPN. If not, give IT a call. If your campus does NOT have a VPN, I don't know what to tell you because I don't know anything about setting up one. I believe you have to pay for it as a service, though it might just require some router investigation. Good luck if you're in this boat. 2.) Once you've identified your VPN you need to connect to it through your mac. Go to System Preferences, Network. then click on the +. Click VPN and then whatever type of VPN your network is (mine was Cisco). Set up your VPN using your credentials. Mine were provided by IT on my campus' IT page. If your campus is anything like mine, it'll be some kind of username that you log into campus services with, your password, and maybe a group name (provided by IT). You'll also need to click on Authentication Settings and enter a shared secret (provided by IT). Once all this is done, click connect. If it connects properly, good job, you've successfully connected to your VPN. 3.) Share your VPN with your PS4. This part is probably the most tricky and I only know how to do on OS X. I will investigate ways to do it on Windows. Go into System Preferences, Sharing, then click on Internet Sharing. The goal is to share your VPN with your PS4. You can do this two ways: ethernet or wifi. I chose ethernet (i.e. there is an ethernet cable running from my mac to my ps4). Then select that you want to share VPN in the dropdown menu. Check the box at the left for internet sharing. It will prompt you to start sharing; click okay. If that succeeds you should now be sharing any VPN connections you have with your PS4. Double check and make sure you're connected to your VPN again, then proceed to step 4. 4.) Connect to your computer through your PS4. Go to your PS4, network, then set up connection. Go through wifi or ethernet depending on which one your VPN is shared through. Mine was ethernet, as I said above, so I chose ethernet. Then just click easy and let the connection fill out all the details automatically. Test your connection. If your connection succeeds here then, congratulations, your ps4 is now connected to your VPN. Brilliant. 5.) Open Destiny and hold on to your butt. I hope this works for you. ~~~~~~~~~~ HOW TO DO (Windows 7): 1.) Same as OS X above. 2.) Time to connect to VPN on your computer. Click start button, then type into the run box "VPN." Click enter. Enter the address of your VPN (mine was provided by IT at my school). Click next and on the next screen enter your username and password. Mine were my school username and password for logging into services like blackboard, etc. If you have a domain enter that as well (also referred to as Group in OS X, I believe). It will start to try and connect. If it connects just from that, great. It didn't for me. Time to enable some specific settings. Click on your network at the bottom right (where you would select a wifi or ethernet network) and right click on the VPN you just set up, select properties. Go to the security tab and you will probably need to change Type of VPN. Mine was a Cisco one, which corresponds to L2TP/IPSec. You may have to call IT or do some research to figure this out, sorry. Then click on advanced settings. You probably have a shared secret key, and if you do you'll need to enter it here. Click okay. 3.) Now we need to enable internet sharing. Like above this can be done with ethernet or wifi. Essentially, you want to give your PS4 access to your VPN through your PC. If you still have your VPN properties menu open, go to the Sharing tab. Check "Allow network users to use" and then select whether you want to share to your PS4 through ethernet or wifi. I selected ethernet. If all is well, double check that your connection to your VPN works and continue on. Steps 4-5.) Same as OS X above. ~~~~~~~~~~ Closing remarks: it's kind of -blam!-ed that we have to go through this process to play, and I'm sure it will slow down my connection. Bungie, as soon as you have more insight into this, please share it with the community, as I'm sure not everyone has a VPN, not to mention I don't even know how to do something like this on a PC (though I will update this if I discover how). Good luck everyone still having trouble. Praise be to our Lord and Savior Centigod.
