A Global/Local chat in the tower is a MUST.

The game will flounder without something like this. A key element of Destiny are it's Strikes and Raids. For games of these types, it is imperative to be able to organize, advertise positions for, and invite people in real time, without having to go to a forum of some kind. Also, a chat will facilitate the social interaction this game is desperately missing. Yes, people will be annoyed having to type with the in-game keypad, but they'll get over it. They'll get used to it. And there's always the option to plug in a wireless/wired keyboard. I don't understand why Bungie has stuck their head in the mud with this. Maybe they envision their perfect game is so good it doesn't "need" chat, we can all just endlessly dance together! >.> Warframe has a great example of how they could possibly do the chat. A little inconspicuous menu you can pull up from the side. You can invite people from the chat, you get a group of people who want to play right now, etc.

This. A thousand times this. I actually just made a post about this a few minutes ago. A little redundant considering yours is more eloquently written but maybe if Bungie sees enough people post about this in the feedback section it will get their attention. The lack of chat tools in the Alpha had me worried. Nothing seems changed for the Beta and now I'm even more worried. Has Bungie at least acknowledged this as an issue or given a reason as to why they haven't given us text chat? The game's UI seems like it was meant for it anyway. The messages can just fill up the feed in the corner of your screen that says when players are dancing/pointing to other players. For those who don't like obnoxious spammers and trolls, then the chat log should be able to be hidden easy. That probably won't be much of an issue though seeing how Tower lobbies only hold up to 16 players anyway.
