Guardian Lore Video! ( Spoiler Maybe?)

The ending is the best part IMO of this video.. Make sure you watch the WHOLE thing :) Are Guardians Zombies? Or something more? We dug and dug for this info and Leopard created a pretty great video on the topic with the evidence uncovered. Take a peek, if you dare. Also found on Reddit here http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/29gtta/are_guardians_zombies_or_something_else_spoiler/ While this is a Obvious speculation piece. The details in this video are quite the argument to say we are dead. i personally buy into the theory that we are vessels of the Travelers Light. What do You think about this? Our Angels.. Our Guardians? Are we Guardian Angels? We Are An Army Of The Chosen Dead! In Bungie We Trus7

      • I also like how you have to "resurrect" ghosts hidden in the game. Not "reactivate" or "collect" or whatever, its purposely resurrect, almost like your returning the favour.

I was thinking since religion and belief play a big part in the story of bungie games. Perhaps being resurrected by 'the light' might have some references to Christ being resurrected, this got me thinking of the 'holy trinity', 3 man squad - Hunter, Titan and Warlock. Also at a bit of a push the father (man), the son (exo, created by man) and the holy ghost (awoken). A bit of a stretch but why not.

A while back I believe at the first unveiling of Destiny. A Bungie dev brought up that Arthur C Clarke's Childhood's End which was based on his short story Guardian Angels was a big influence as it should be it's an amazing book read it if you have a chance. Don't look at the spoiler if you haven't read the book.
Is the Traveler the Overseer? Is the Overmind the Darkness they speak of ? Dunno but man that would it be amazing. Because IMO the Overmind destroyed humanity.
Was the fact that Ghosts choose their Guardians from the dead not known before? I swear all of this was common knowledge once the Alpha hit, otherwise I'm not sure how I have known this for a while, without actually having dug deep like the creators of this video. Progo, who created the thread about Destiny's Egyptian ties a little while ago, also seemed to know this from how he edited his bit about the Awoken being the dead:
EDIT: This bit is outdated, as it turns out that all guardians have been raised from the dead.
Can anyone else confirm that this knowledge has been floating around already? Still, good work on the video and the compiling of supporting evidence. Edit: It was probably from the Guardian Grimoire card. The card wasn't exactly difficult for any Alpha user to find, and I wouldn't say it was beating around the bush either when it stated outright in its description of Guardians: "Chosen from the dead by the Traveler's Ghosts".

                  • Still impressed that you guy paid that much attention to details in the alpha. Any time I had a though I was oooh look something shiny. But interesting theories non the less. The Raven is very symbolic in Norse Mythology, no surprise with a Bungie game . Ravens in Celtic mythology was linked to darkness and death especially in warriors.

It would definitely provide a valid in-game reason for respawning. To add yet another layer to your theory: What if the so-called "Ancient Dead" were, in fact, gamers? Think about it: Ghosts comb through ancient databases & come across what appear to be the statistics of warriors who have single-handedly waged campaigns against and defeated entire enemy armies, with amazing skills in attaining various goals during their missions, as well as crazy K/D ratios during internecine conflicts (that is, PvP). The Ghosts take one look at these statstics & they think "Jackpot!! THESE are the people we need to fight against the Darkness!" Normally, such a move would make for great comedy, as the Ghost would perhaps have little to no knowledge of "video games" or the average gamer's physical shortcomings, resulting in the kind of fish-out-of-water storyline that generates big laughs among moviegoing audiences everywhere. However, Ghosts are advanced enough to create perfect (if somewhat generic, stats-wise) bodies for these resurrected gamers as well as imbue those bodies with the skills & reflexes needed to handle the rigors of combat and allow them to channel the Traveler's power. Bodies are, after all, physical things. Skills can be imparted into those bodies with relative ease. What we call "skills" are patterns encoded in the neurons of the cerebrum and "reflexes" are muscle memory encoded in the basal ganglia. Both skills and voluntary reflexes are usually learned by engaging in repeatable patterns of activity: piano lessons, basket weaving, martial arts, target shooting, etc. Given a sufficiently advanced level of medical knowledge, all of these things can effectively be pre-programmed into a brain. What's missing are the less well-defined factors of the human psyche: those more ephemeral criteria that vary from person to person, such as the strength and courage needed to blaze through a predetermined path in the face of overwhelming adversity, the ingenuity to seek out alternative paths, the wisdom to know which of these courses of action to take depending on the situation, and the sheer drive that pushes most gamers to beat the game at the highest difficulty level. When you look at it from that perspective, gamers are pretty much an ideal list of candidates. So I say that Guardians are not mere "zombies", but rather they are resurrected gamers. Given the fact that Bungie has gone to great lengths to incorporate in-game explanations for well-known game mechanics into Destiny's storyline (Respawning=reconstituted by your Ghost, Pulling weapons, gear & vehicles from thin air=Digital storage of their matter patterns, one-size-fits-all ammo, etc), it makes sense that Guardians are reconstituted gamers. It would certainly explain why our names are our gamer tags.

                      • A solid thread with some compelling evidence. Very nice! I have to wonder, what are the criteria for resurrection? Also, what if nobody survived the Darkness and that's just a tale we're told to hide the tru7h from us. That the entire city is filled with nothing but the dead and that if the light of the Traveler goes out, so do the people...
Only time will tell...or maybe DeeJ
A good chuckle was had.

                        • I like it, but I have just one consideration. Let's not use "zombies". Technically, if what you figured out is true, then the Guardians would more closely fit with being reincarnated beings by the Traveler, rather than reanimated corpses. Now, whether or not they have their original body or not, we don't know, but giving them new bodies makes more sense. Maybe the awoken were given new living bodies, but changed in some unknown way by the Traveler, The Exo could be entirely Traveler created mechanical beings that were given living souls(or Light, or whatever). Or maybe they were two other races of beings that were wiped out by the Darkness and resurrected by the Traveler on Earth to serve as Guardians. Either way though, the term "zombie" only loosely fits.

It's the most plausible lore/canon based explanation for how we as players die a dozen times trying to kill a boss and still make it back to the Tower at the end of the day. Ghosts have the ability to reanimate/revive/resurrect us.

                            • I noticed a few of those when I was playing the Alpha, and have the same inclination. As an old guy by gaming standards (37), I'm really looking forward to discovering the lore. It was my favorite part when I was addicted to World of Warcrack.
