Because if those sections didn't exist, we'd never see their point of view. We don't need a "white" or a "men" section. The Black Voices section and the Women section are made to give voice those who are oppressed.
oppressed
LOL I don't have a problem with giving special privileges to those who need them, but blacks and women are definitely not oppressed at this point. The people who are truly oppressed are the gays and those who use drugs. If anything, they're the ones who need special HuffPost pages.

  • Maybe because I live in NYC and have experience Stop and Frisk firsthand, yes, people of color are absolutely oppressed. They are profiled simply for the color of their skin. You should read this. If you don't think women are oppressed, I'd like you to tell me why you think that way.

  • If you're even slightly racist against a black person, you're literally shunned out of the community. And women? Have you even HEARD of #YesAllWomen? If you advocate for any kind of gender differentiation, you're a misogynist monster. On the other hand, if someone hears that you smoke pot recreationally, you're laughed at and denied so many basic privileges. Most jobs won't even let you work if you smoke weed or do any kind of drug during non-working hours. There's a word for that. It's called institutionalized discrimination, and it's blatantly allowed to happen while people are obsessing over tiny cracks of racism in our society. Ridiculous.
If you're even slightly racist against a black person, you're literally shunned out of the community.
Maybe you shouldn't be racist.
Have you even HEARD of #YesAllWomen? If you advocate for any kind of gender differentiation, you're a misogynist monster.
Yes, I have. Generally it's a good thing. They're advocating for equal rights. One of their statements about r@pe is summed up as: "women shouldn't be taught not to wear certain clothing, men should be taught not to r@pe." Women need support because of things like this, or this. Keep in mind, half of America supports politicians advocating for that stuff. As far as drug use and the stigma against it goes, that actually stems back to racism in the early part of the 20th century. Weed was criminalized because politicians needed to get rid of this easy cash crop in order to make other industries extremely profitable, and they did that by saying "oh the black man smokes it and then goes out and r@pes white women!" The stigma still exists because of all the negative stereotypes perpetuated around stoners, as well as cheesy news headlines that downplay the seriousness of weed and how much we need to legalize it. "Pot bill goes up in smoke" etc etc. You may not think it's that serious, but in actuality because of the American media turning it into a joke, it de-legitimizes the movement.

  •
oppressed
This is where the root of this issue begins. Why are these groups inherently oppressed, by nature it seems? We live in a country that separates individuals from their ancestors, yet ancestral oppression is constantly brought up in both of these groups. We live in the age of Affirmative Action, yet it seems that oppression is discussed more than it has ever been.

They're oppressed by males who have been conditioned to think they're supposed to be dominant over females. It's not the females who are in the wrong, it's the male dominated society we all live in. Feminism is just trying to balance it out, making it so none of the genders dominate the other. As far as people of color go, if they live in the US, they are taught that their color is inherently a bad thing. White people have an easier time finding jobs, getting into schools, etc etc just by nature of their skin color.
yet it seems that oppression is discussed more than it has ever been.
This is because people are starting to realize that they should not try to impose their views onto other people. If you thought abortion or easy access to birth control for females was completely and totally wrong and immoral, would you vote against it? Even if the decision has absolutely zero impact on you? If you do, you are imposing your view onto someone elses body, and removing their choice. Google "war on women" because as many people don't like to admit it's a real thing, it is.
