Both are 64 bit versions so as to not be strangely locked to 3.5gb ram like 32 bit is. assume both are running off an intel 1150 haswell chip/mobo.
8.1 is newer and they're both around $150-$200 USD locally with 8 being strangely cheaper.
8.1 is truthfully designed for only tablet and lolthinksit'saPC tablets and it not optimized for KBM controls even though they're barely still useable when using 8 on desktops. MS provides security updates to 8.1 unlike older versions of defender which are "discontinued" Support status.
Win 7 has more programs than 8, it is optimized for KBM. programs for games would probably have more compatiblity. plus it is based off of vista/XP instead of touchscreen.
bungie, what do? also explain your reasons please.
it's not really a poll so you can participate instead of clicking a button and scurrying off
Windows 7 ultimate. This needs no explanation.

-
Get a MacBook Air. Shits advanced as PCs get.

Both are good.

Would you rather a commodore 64?
-
Windows XP is best.
-
Windows 8.1 combined with Start8 is the best thing ever.
-
Edited by Faztor 5: 6/8/2014 9:40:08 AM8.1 cause is faster. If you don't like the interface you could put start8 and it looks like Win7, i've got Start8 and the result is this
Both are 64 bit versions so as to not be strangely locked to 3.5gb ram like 32 bit is.
32bit machines can only address 2^32 addresses in memory. 2^32 = 4294967296 bytes 4294967296 = 4GB The reason you don't get the whole 4GB to use in Windows is because the reserved part is for the OS.

Windows 8 has faster boot times and copy speeds, not really much of a reason to drop a couple of hundred bucks for a new OS. Not to mention the dual-GUI crap annoys me, and the general aesthetic blows compared to Aero.

Been using 8 (now 8.1) on my desktop and laptop for a while. It's faster and more responsive, and the ribbon menus are great. The metro screen is unnecessary, but I do like that it functions as a much better search feature than the previous version in the start menu. I've never had any compatibility issues, and it runs games perfectly fine. Plus, it was free from my university, so that's cool.

MacOS
Sue me.
Edited by Random: 6/8/2014 3:10:22 AM8.1 for sure. It works just fine (0 problems with gaming, ever) and for a similar price.
-
also Corsair 650D vs 750D for a first build?
-
I actually just got 8.1 for $95 off amazon.
-
almost everything you said is wrong.

Windows 8 is better. It might be confusing at first but it's 10x better

Edited by Bistromathics: 6/7/2014 11:57:38 PMI use Win8.1, and the only difference from Win7 is that my boot times are faster. I run old and new games, emulators, office software, Autodesk software, and some programming tools, and I have yet to run into compatibility issues. I use a keyboard and mouse and have no problems with a lack of optimization. I don't use any Metro apps, but I never have to see the UI either. I've found that the new Start Screen is easier to use than the Start Menu though. If there's a specific software suite you're concerned about, you can look up the compatibility with Win8. In my experience, everything has been pretty seamless.

Windows 8 w/ Classic Shell.
-
Well, I can get Windows 7 Ultimate for free, so I would have to go with it. And no, I'm not pirating it.
-
The Windows 8->8.1 autoupdate caused my computer to start having spikes in disk activity that caused my computer to stall periodically. I had to refresh and reinstall 8 along with all of my other shit to fix it. So in short, FUCK WINDOWS 8.1!
-
I can find them both for $90. I'd go with Win 7
-
Win 7. Win 7 is infinitely better than 8 in every possible way.
