College

I'm just curious to know what college is like and how it works. I was wondering if any of you are in college or graduated from college so you tell what it's like and how it works.

  • I go to class (or not), attend a mandatory practicum every week, write a couple of massive papers and then take an exam at the end of the semester. That's pretty much it.

    • Currently enrolled in college, have been for a year now. College can either be piss easy or batshit hard, USE RATEMYPROFESSOR.COM, THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO. Whether or not the classes will be hard is based solely on the professor you have, picking a class with a certain professor is JUST AS IMPORTANT as picking the time and day the class takes. Do not squander this tip, it's vital.

        • From my experience in a university as a Freshman, I enjoyed it. There were a lot of helpful people and a lot of them were really nice (In more ways than one), but it was overly expensive. The price was bad, but the people were good. Community college on the other hand? I'm getting the exact same quality of education for the lower division classes compared to the UC in this town. My last semester, I had two professors that jointly taught at the UC, and the community college here, so they taught us the same way that they would teach the college students in the UC. My other professor taught at the CSU and taught the exact same way he did in the CSU. Really, it all depends on the price, the quality is the exact same. I have attended my professors' classes at the CSU and the UC just to see if there really is any difference. There isn't a huge difference other than class size (The UC and CSU have smaller class sizes, while the community college has a bigger class size) and arrogance. The students at the community college are just there to learn and get out, while the UC and CSU students are really arrogant (And not really smart, at least in the lower division classes they aren't really smart).

          • Depends on where you go, but the general big differences are you have more freedom and it directly costs you money.

            • I go to a community college, its not exactly what I would consider difficult. All I can say is manage your time wisely, otherwise you'll get behind fast.

            • It's not terribly difficult or terribly easy. You don't go to class 7AM-3PM anymore, but instead pick out 4-6 classes that work out in your schedule and take down requirements for you to get your degree. These classes are usually scattered throughout the week. (MWF and T TH classes are the most common you will get) Your homework usually isn't due the next class time but instead you are given a week to the whole semester to finish the assignments. So you gotta manage your time and make sure you get all your stuff done before the due dates. You now have to take care of yourself, mommy isn't around to do your laundry anymore. You gotta do your laundry, go to the commons (basically the lunchroom) and fill yourself up, always keep your toiletries stocked, wake yourself up, get to class on time(some teachers will dock points if you miss enough classes) and for the love of my nose remember to take a shower. Oh wow, you now have responsibilities and have to fly solo, that SUCKS. Nah, extreme freedom comes with this package of managing yourself. You abuse your freedom you will pay the price though.

From what I've heard for the degree I'm going into, it's a full time job and doesn't give you much room for a social life. It's probably different for different majors.

              • When I was a senior in high school, I asked one of the graduates from the previous year what it was like going to college at the university I'm attending now. He said, "It's just school, except you live there." Now that I'm at college, it is pretty much just school. Of course there's money stuff, taking care of yourself, keeping yourself in check and making sure that you take care of certain forms and such, but it is pretty much just school.
