I assert a counter theory to that. They were one of the previous races that the traveler tried to use like us and that the power corrupted their good intentions and they sought the power of the darkness as well as the traveler. The traveler then abandoned them and they turned on each other. They now chase after the traveler out of revenge for their ruined civilization and the darkness is the closes thing they could call a partner.

Huh, pretty good actually. Though I don't think they would firmly ally with the darkness
the hive are rumoured to be the result of when a species tries to use the darkness's power
Didn't say that they were actually an ally. I said that it was the closest thing that they could call one. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. They could also be leaching off power from what forces/sources they can find. It would explain advancement of unique weapons for them.

Still, I doubt the fallen want anything to do with the darkness, mostly due to the concept art shown of the fallen and cabal apparently 'zombified' by the darkness.

What art assets did you find this in? I've been through pretty much every multimedia multiple times and have yet to find this.

Couple of problems with that pic. 1. It's an early concept shot and was one of the older ones that I've seen since destiny had been announced. 2. All the glowing bits aren't out of the norm from what we have seen in more recent screenshots and such of both the Cabal and the Fallen. and 3. The Fallen have been shown to have less than a strict code of allegiances and have been seen working with other factions.
