The most atrocious thing about titanfall and CoD is that the engine for both games are extremely mediocre, and the thing that pisses me off the most, is that these games sell a shit ton, the developers are acting as role models for a younger generation. If devs are to make games that are half-ass'd and are just flat "C" work it tells college students or high school students that its perfectly fine to not strive for the best of quality, to not strive for the upper bars of excellence as other games do, Because what? Because we (Respawn/Infinity Ward) make these games with lower conditions and sell just fine, so you don't have to worry about pioneering or being a leader. You can get by just fine with "C" work. This mentality is disgusting

But there's nothing wrong with either of the engines they use, one uses the Source engine and the other one uses a modified quake engine. They might not look as nice as newer game engines that focus on better graphics but they work and that's what you really want. Also you want to build off past work, there is no point in having to make a whole engine for your game if someone else has one that fits your needs. Not to mention even in undergraduate level classes for Comp Sci as soon as they got into classes they should emphasize being able to reuse your code and build off of it. There's no point in completely re-building everything for a program if you have access to to parts you can use for it already.

In fact, I think Respawn purposely downgraded the source engine for the game

  • I'm in the same boat. As someone who is going to school majoring in CS and aspiring to one day design video games. It makes me sick so many games can get pumped out with so little innovation or thought. People say Titanfall will change everything; to me it felt like a slow version of Crysis. The verticality is nothing new, nor are mechanical units a player can pilot. The only thing new is me being able to mindlessly push through waves of incredibly poor AI, with the occasional sprinkle of actual player. After playing Titanfall beta for 2 hours with a friend, I honestly sat back and said to him "you can't teach old dogs(former IW developers) new tricks."

Well here's the thing.....first off, I don't want to make this long, but will if I have to, but titanfall's gameplay is actually rather good. Here is the thing, it is poorly executed because of the lack for attention in the other aspects that make the game up. Think of titanfall's gamplay as being 6 feet off the ground, while all other aspects and regions of the game development is only 2 feet off the ground. "A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link."

  • Just tell me. Seriously, if the gameplay is stellar, then what could possibly be wrong? The netcode is great from what I and my friends have experienced, the bots fulfill their intended role, and the maps are well designed. So what's the problem?

  • If it has to do with your main post about minimal effort, I'm gonna have to disagree with you. You see, the engine that Titanfall uses, the source engine, was a good choice, as many are able to play the game, both on the Xbox platform and PC. Also, while the "C" work might be true of other games, I do think Respawn put forth effort to make Titanfall a fun game, and ultimately I and many others think they succeeded in their goal. Also, when it comes to innovation, everyone copies what's successful until there comes time for change. It's a sad reality, but it's true. But there are always diamonds in the rough, and I definitely think Titanfall is one of them.

  • You won this round, I WILL be back though! (not really) But seriously, I'm done talking about this game and inevitable franchise of titanfall, I don't like the game, I'm entitled to my own opinion. I'm wasting my breath, the game is literally destroying my core of a gamer. I have to stop before I damage even more of my reputation. All I have to say is this, and I'll be gone from every titanfall/CoD thread again. Titanfall: Call of Duty 2.0 for a New Generation

  • Alrighty then. But hey, think of it like this. More Mech games will rise from the dead if Titanfall succeeds.

  • Oh dude! If you agree with me on this you'll like the movie "Grandma's Boy." Every gamer should see it.
