Batman acts all friendly like to Supes while secretly poisoning him with krypto for the 6 months leading up to the fight. By the time Batsy makes his move Supes won't even be able to get out of bed.

  • Are you implying Superman wouldn't notice the toxins and radiation from the Kryptonite, and NOT act upon it? You know Superman is smarter than Batman, right?

  •
You know Superman is smarter than Batman, right?
This is where I may have to draw the line. IMO, they're two different types of intelligence, and none is "smarter than the other". I believe Bruce is more tactical and strategy orientated. In a battle of wits, I'd say Bats takes him there. Clark on the other hand is more computationally smart. He can accumulate a vast wealth of knowledge but he isn't extremely good at applying that knowledge to outsmart his opponents.

  • I strongly disagree. Superman is just that - a Super Man. Kryptonians are naturally smarter than Humans, but that's not the only evidence that I can bring. Superman regularly defeats Lex Luthor and Brainiac, arguably the two smartest characters in DC. Both of which surpass Batman in intelligence (but of course, Batman is a 'superior tactician'.) Batman's only natural abilities are possessing a photographic memory (whereas Superman's memory borderlines total recall), and his detective-ness. He learned all his strategies and tactics from schooling and research. So that begs the question: if Superman were to read all of those same books, learn those same tactics (and possibly more), would Batman be a superior tactician? I bet no. It's not that Superman isn't as good of a tactician or detective as Batman, he just doesn't need to be. Batman needs those skills to function at a level where he's needed on the JL, whereas Superman doesn't. So of course, they highlight Batman's strategic input more than Superman to make him seem needed. Look, I actually like Batman more than Supes. But as much as DC jerks Batman to unrealistic proportions, they jerk Superman MUCH more.

Again, all of that can be coined under computational intelligence. Superman can read as many books as he likes, but as I said, he isn't good at thinking outside the box and being a naturally good detective, which is why I think Batman is the better strategist. Being a naturally good tactician isn't something you can just learn. It needs to be inherited. Oh and the only reason he consistently defeats Braniac and Lex Luthor is because he punches his way out of situations like that (and partly due to them being the villain of the week). It's usually a rarity where he uses advanced critical thinking skills to solve the problem. The only time I actually recall Superman outsmarting Lex Luthor was in the Blackring story arc, but one could make the argument it was Lex's ego and not Clark's intelligence.

  • Meh, I still disagree. I don't think Batman's strategic mind is a natural skill, rather something he learned from his many mentors. And also, that's not entirely true. Superman has been able to outsmart Luthor/Brainiac, he just happens to use his strength abilities proportionately more than his smarts. Batman would do the exact same with Superman's strength.

I think it's part learning and part inheritance. He's outwitted those who have intelligence as their actual power. I wouldn't be underestimating him so easily. So I still stand by my statement that Superman is more scientifically/raw data smart, but not so critically thinking smart. It's the only display of intelligence we've actually ever seen from him, e.g. synthesizing a formula for Lois in All Star and reading all the medical textbooks ever published. But he constantly gets undermined by the expert tacticians and evil geniuses, such as Max Lord, Batman and Ras' Al Ghul and Desaad.
Superman has been able to outsmart Luthor/Brainiac
Such issue as?

  • Again, I disagree. But to each their own. I can't remember for Brainiac, but All-Star Superman (which you've obviously read) depicts Superman outsmarting Luthor with the gravity gun.
