Satellites Come Crashing Down

So, the other day, I was on the Wikipedia page for the ISS (International Space Station), when I noticed that it had an orbital decay value of 2 Km every month. Curious, I looked in farther to see that most objects in space have either an orbital decay, meaning that that small amount of atmosphere in space slows down the ISS, pushing closer to earth, where more atmosphere means more decay and so on and so forth. When Skylab had reached the end of its life span, they calculated that it would fall in an unpopulated area, and so let it decay right in earth. Wile the majority was destroyed in the atmosphere, it was not all destroyed. To keep the ISS safely in space, NASA has to push it back up every few months, highlighted in the picture above. After the collapse, there was no one to make sure all of the satellites in orbit would stay in orbit... This means that in the destiny universe, there could hundreds of landing sights of satellites that were in space at the time of the collapse, and may still have data relating to what happened during the time of collapse. Possible sde mission for destiny? Thoughts? Edit 11/06/14: Just would like to say that I posted this December of 2013 and I totally called the Warstat Public event. Not exactly as I wrote it out but you got to admit I was very close!

  • Let us assume that it wasn't satellites that are found but small space stations throughout the galaxy, as the smaller satellites can hold a "black box" or safe box that may be able to withstand the heat, pressure and impact associated with re-entry and can be a fun hidden treasure type mini-game I would rather explore a more direct and re-playable scenario. With the small space stations we can explore the inside which may or may not be taken over as bases by enemies or can be a newly discovered wreck on a planets surface or even be still in space (drifting space frigate type) and can be taken over by players who clear it out and can be replayed with different enemy factions taking over the same ruins. They can also play a part in a weekly, or monthly, defend-type scenario where a group of players need to stave off waves of enemies who are attacking and depending on the size, many fire squads or fire teams may be able to fend off different parts of the station and for those who fail, others may be able to clear those areas which were taken over still allowing for more play. I like the team play aspect of small space station gameplay rather than hide and seek but the two could be combined where to find these space stations you must find the hidden satellite safe boxes strewn about the landscape and to find them you must search the many facets of the planets rock faces or heat-blasted glassy sand craters.

      • most of the satellites in orbit now are small enough that they would completely burn up in the earth's atmosphere. and if they didn't its highly unlikely that any data would remain intact on a super-heated piece of metal plummeting towards the surface of the earth. they're much more likely to have us fly out and dock with derelict space stations and larger orbital platforms.

      • Well there'll definitely be space junk but I wouldn't get my hopes up for this type of stuff Bungie has so much to work on with the gameplay and all They can't model the entire world with complete scientific accuracy

        • This seems like it'd be pretty easy to fabricate with Grognok, and promises to be a FANTASTIC random mission. Win-win all around, I'd say.

        • It would be awesome if there was a mission to watch one land and then scavenge and possibly usable bits off it.

        • Very interesting idea for side missions. Find and retrieve data. Unlock info on a bunker/weapons cache. Get swag
