Progress Not Lost, Characters

As I was re-visiting Podcast #40... I had a sudden bit of insight with this idea of not losing progress. I think Turks immediately considered that to mean all classes are interchangeable, and most podcasters seemed to be somewhat concerned about the lack of 'commitment' that would mean towards playing a specific class. Another pair of issues I see with being able to suddenly change classes relates to multiplayer and potentially co-op as well. After all, if you know Orca (me, ;-)) and you happen to match up against him in multiplayer - you are expecting a Titan. Yet, then you suddenly see him wielding Hunter foci and sliding under rockets, which creates a moment of disorientation because it makes no sense to you. In co-op, you will depend on me to be the tanky component for Strikes and Raids, so when my login shows up through Xbox Live - you can say "Hey, Orca ... let's go hit the Citadel." But then, I show up and suddenly I am a squishy Warlock along with your Warlock and perhaps now the Strike is going to be really tough to pull off. So, with these thoughts in mind, I wanted to point out that progress may not be lost - but that does not mean that switching classes will be easy. After all, Tyson Green's interview on the GI Destiny Hub stated that you will be forced to commit to certain things (likely focus but it was not explicitly stated) and have to keep them for "awhile". This would be totally counter to setting the game up where you can slip in and out of character class at a moments notice. I propose that Bungie may have a challenge system (Raids or Strikes) to anyone who decides to change class. What brought this to mind are the days of yore with ye olde pencil and paper RPGs such as a Paladin or Ranger's quest to regain the abilities of their class. While it will not be exactly like that, I can see them requiring some proof that you are able to become the new class, to make sure players are really sure about their decision to change. Just because you can switch, does not mean it will be simple - like a toggle switch on the character sheet. So, people you know will be informed of your decision to change class because you will need help in overcoming these challenges and your charcter will grow into the next class. This keeps the story intact and makes sense from a narrative perspective. So, here is to hoping that Bungie is considering such a path towards logically changing characters.

 • I was just reading that again, and I think its referring to switching out your focus - under the same class character. The example of the Warlock was to have one focus build for doing damage and another for being a healer. I was unclear as to if you can actually transfer those xps to a different class character.
