Where did that even come from? I've never come across that as being anything but fan theorizing/assumption.....pretty sure that Davies even [i]said[/i] the whole "only 12 regenerations" thing was something that'd never been said on the show >_>

I got that, but it's basically just a thinly vieled excuse for a deus ex machina plot asspull.

It's not like they're going to end the show. They had to come up with something. It seems like everyone is assuming he got 12 more regenerations, but we know for sure that he got one. I would have preferred them use the excuse that he got more regenerations from River. (which everyone assumed happened when they kissed during that one episode) That would have also tied up more of Matt Smith's adventures as the Doctor. I guess we'll see in 3 or 4 years when Capaldi leaves, since it seems like 3 seasons is the max for a Doctor in the new series.
