I would argue that CE also focused on mystery.

not the primary focus, but it was absolutely present. odst has all the hallmarks of contemporary mystery fiction, and they're ever-present throughout the rookie's story. ce's got them too, but the greater focus on action makes me lean towards the "adventure" classification.

  •
not the primary focus
Well, that's somewhat subjective(in terms of the 'feel'). IMO, CE did have a very strong emphasis on mystery: the giant ring world i.e Halo you crash landed on invoked a sense of wonder and you got to uncover it's secrets as the story progressed, the Flood's introduction and so on. I know The Fall of Reach(by that I mean the first novel) elaborated on a few of the concepts present in CE, but nevertheless I always felt like there was so much to discover. Yes, the scale of the game is probably more epic than ODST, but I think it still manages to capture a sense of mystery(although I'm not denying ODST also had that, it still did).

it possesses mystery elements and clearly tries to give off a mysterious tone (specifically in the first six missions) but is structured very differently to how a work of mystery fiction would be. i won't deny that it can be played for the mystery, but the work as a whole isn't exactly mystery fiction.

My claim was on a subjective note (probably nostalgic). Objectively, that's a different aspect (in relation to CE and ODST's technical classification).

ah, no problem then. really it was my mistake, you said "focused on mystery" instead of "was a mystery work." sowwee D:
