Urban Warfare

Imagine this: your guardian is taking a stroll on the tower terrace, shopping for armor mods, and generally being at ease. Suddenly a HUD alert appears, and a near by PA screen shows a mo-cap city official announcing that a pre-collapse ship had just bypassed the Traveler's shields and crash landed in a residential area near the outer wall. The official orders all available guardians to investigate and help with search and rescue. You hop into a rapid transit pod and arrive on site moments later. Rather than a disaster site, what you find is more akin to a battleground: the ship (seen as a smoldering behemoth in the background) was actually one of the derelict ships from Saturn, commandeered by the hive for use as a shock pod. Hive drones are everywhere, massacring civilians and fighting security droids/mechs/bots/whatever-you-want-to-call-em. It is up to you and the other players to contain the situation and stop the hive from gaining a foot hold in the city. Could this be an example of a public event? Will we ever have to defend the city directly? Will urban combat be at all present? I think this would be an excellent sort of major event type thing, the like of which would only occur once ore twice a year, and take days to compleat as a community.

  • Harkening back to the GDC presentation, I believe the city will fall. During the Q&A, Joseph Staten answers a question about the game reaching beyond our solar system (like galaxy wide) saying that they (him and Christopher Barret) could not discuss that at the time with huge smiles on their faces. I believe that at some point (not saying the end of this first game) that the earth will fall and what survivors are left will have to find somewhere else to colonize and there will be new enemies or the survivors will search and find new tech on other alien worlds to use in a return to earth and wipe out the enemies of earth. If the city were to stay intact and not fall what would be the point of the game eventually taking us past our own solar system. I know the explorable areas in Destiny are going to be huge, but I also see running out of things to do and explore and fighting the same enemies over and over for 10+ years will get old.
