The "Entitlement Generation" and Gaming Culture; (an Op Ed)

My thoughts on the backlash MS had received from their initial description of the Xbox One and it's progressive, industry-saving policies point (IMO) to a much more dangerous turn in the mind-set of the Gaming communities everywhere. Much of my concern comes from the witnessed actions/words of this new generation of Gamers coming into the forefront. This new "entitlement" generation of gamers has vastly affected the discussions about the industry and where it's future lies. But therein is the issue... People weren't talking at all so much as screaming as loud as they could and nit-picking every little damn thing. Making threats against MS and it's employees... this was the worst period of entitled, elitist, temper tantrum bullshit that I've ever seen from the gaming community. And I don't know what crawled into this new generations' collective ass; but what the hell ever makes you think that just because you spend $60 USD on a game, all of the sudden you have the Gods-given right to make design decisions on every -blam!-ing thing you play? Further, if it doesn't meet their specific design requirements, we organize petitions and DDoS attacks to "punish" the offending development/publishing company? Where the -blam!- to these little retards get off having this type of arrogant attitude? When I was their age, had I acted that arrogant and elitist, my dad would have kicked my ass around the block three times. Gaming and all of its associated communities are headed for it's own Dark Age if this type of attitude continues... The retarded level of backlash against Microsoft for moving the industry forward instead of letting it stagnate is verifiable proof of that.

  • I agree with what you are saying about the internet and this "gen of gamer", but I disagree with your view on MS. MS screwed up their release, and no matter how much the net shouts, that is not what would make MS change their policy. MS changed their policy because they were loosing the pre order battle because they screwed up. A company just doesn't go and restructure itself because they are afraid of the internet backlash. Look at the problems they are having, Surface was dead on release, Zune failed and caused much of the reasons why people do not trust MS on DRM, as the DRM for Zune was the cause of many DRM issues within MS's own ecosystem. Windows phone came out too late, and Win 8 is too much of a mobile interface to please Desktop users. MS has dug the hole they are in right now, and they don't seem to learn from their mistakes. They should have known that a always on 24 hr check in was not good for the system after Adam Orth opened his big mouth, and that was before the announcement fail they had. They limited their market by making that 24hr restriction, to only the people who have a fully reliable, dedicated connection to the internet, which many in the US do not have yet, not to mention that number is even less outside the US. Even living in NYC I constantly have connection problems that sometimes last weeks. Construction crews accidentally knock down lines, trees fall all the time, last time I lost internet for a week it was because a drunk driver crashed into a pole. Now look at the number of countries that will be left out of the X1 launch or will have decreased functions at launch because they are not in the US. It shows to me that MS has had their head in the sand for far too long and only now are realizing the trouble they are in, after seeing dismal world wide pre order sales. Here in the states they will probably be fine, but world wide is where they are in trouble. This has nothing to do with internet outcry and everything to do with mistakes made within MS and MS misjudging the market.

Not everyone who disliked MS's policies is an entitled raging tosser. It's been very simple for me to decide between the two - PS4 and Sony offered a Console and Service that I liked the sound of far more than Microsoft's Xbox One. Not everyone on the planet has 24/7 Internet access and is prepared to bend over for DRM where it doesn't need to be implemented. Microsoft only U-turned because they were being massacred about 4:1 on the preorder ratios. They only care about making money, Opinions and employee safety are pretty irrelevant to the higher ups. It was because very few people were preordering the Xbox One and many where preordering the PS4 instead. However you are mostly correct in that the general backlash was childish. But it wasn't totally unjustified arrogant entitlement.

      • You're on to something gold here. Unfortunately you've left a chink in your armor. A consumer has every right to give input to a company as to what product they want and which they don't want. Microsoft jumped the gun and went with all the policies we thought were unacceptable. So both the righteous indignant and the selfish entitled jumped on the same bandwagon. Another example would be Bioware. First they trash the Mona Lisa that is Mass Effect then they have the nerve to attack their community. Some Devs aren't saints but Casey Hudson took it to a whole new level. But yeah, I'm easy going and when there is a feature like sword blocking or armor lock that's an annoyance. I'll sound off but respectfully and continue enjoying the game instead of brooding about it. I hate seeing Bungie take flak from little rage monsters.

While I disagree that the Xbone DRM policies were "industry saving", I will agree that the people making death threats took it way too far. However, I'd like to stress that those people are a very vocal minority.

      • The backlash basically comes down to people over reacted, way to much. A lot of generations have always had the "self entitlement thinking" it's just that when something happens that people don't like they complain. While people that do like it, don't talk. So it looks like more people hated it. If people would have sat down and logically think what could happen, it wouldn't have been as bad. Also, if people wouldn't have listened to all the rumors. Remember the rumor about always online? Not true. But when they announced the 24 hour check in, people already had a big negative view, so anything was already going to be negative. Same with every other rumor that wasn't true.

      • Ok, so if Microsoft was trying to move on to enlightenment or whatever.. Than why did they change it? Ya people complained but stopped complaining and went to Sony. Enlightenment fail, it's not the gamers fault they got something they didn't want. It's microsofts.

The most annoying thing is that everyone kicked and screamed, and then M$ listened. Yet, everyone is all like "Too late I'm going to Sony now" ( We all no how amazing Sony is, right?!). Such rebels! You'll show Microsoft! They're 2edgy4ms.

          • Followed and could not agree more. people became so upset yelling about the things they didn't like and spreading the bad. and never stopped for a second to think of the good and spread that. the same way people yelled that cloud computing is impossible. yet it has been proven to be possible. Just look up Nvidia cloud lighting. And with an always online system developers would be able to take full advantage of that. I could go on about all the reasons why their policies made sense but im sick and tired of it. Honestly there isnt any use in talking about it now we lost something great.

                  • Luckily the PC platform is relatively safe from this disgusting behavior at the moment. The only aggravating thing it's going through right now is every developer trying to cash in on the MOBA genre. Which unfortunately is going to kill some good franchises (EndWar) and turn interesting and unique concepts (End of Nations) into generic shit in an already bloated genre in the hopes of trying to take away a slice of LoLs pie.

                      • What I hate is when gamers start these petitions to change a company's policies or hardware/software features and then still not buy the product regardless. It'd be like me telling a car salesman exactly what I want, negotiating with him for over an hour, smiling, and saying "Nah, I never really wanted it anyways."

                          • It's the biggest downfall of the internet. Anyone can be heard but no one knows who is shouting. 25 angry threats about the Xbox One could be from one person and we wouldn't know it. So it's really less about people changing and more about the options we have to voice our complaints now.
