Sword Art Online, and the questions it brings up.

I have spent the last two days like watching all 25 episodes of SAO. Holy -blam!-, it was one of the most surreal and emotional experiences I have ever had. The last few episodes of the show had left me speechless, making me want more, and even now, I yearn to follow Kirito through his journey in New Aincrad. I have never felt so attached to a character than I did with Kirito. The show, at least for me, makes you feel like his struggles are your own. If you have not seen this anime, go and see this anime, it is incredible. I am being honest with you, I cried more during the 25 episodes of SAO than the rest of the year combined. That being said, it brings about two questions, one much easier to answer than the other. I will put the questions in spoiler boxes, because they contain information from late episodes. If you have watched up to 20, you should be good. This is the easier of the two questions.
First off, if you had to choose between the two worlds, ALfheim Online or Aincrad, which would you chose? I would honestly choose Aincrad. I hate being a magic user in games, and it seems that is necessary to survive in ALO, where as sword skills are very interesting. Also the environments in SAO are so different from each other, where as in ALO they are all pretty generic, with very little variation. Lastly, communication seems very important and personal in SAO, where as in ALO, it gave me that Planetside 2 feel, where what you are doing ultimately affects everyone, but you have no real connection to your race.
Do not click this unless you have seen all the episodes
If you had the opportunity to be one of the 10,000 SAO players, knowing what you know would you take it? Take into consideration that this includes being trapped in the game and death in the game equaling death in real life. I can say I would. My reasoning behind it is this. There are many people in life, who do nothing of significance. This isn't meant to be rude, it is just something I see as true. We have gas station workers, video store clerks, prostitutes, etc. To these people, life is mundane. Would you not trade that in for something as visceral and exciting as SAO. instead of living your life so boringly, with people walking all over you, you could become a hero, in a fantastic world. Or a fisherman. Or anything. Would you not trade the world you live in for that one in instance. Trade a world where everything you do is worthless for a place where you could do something that mattered in the realm of that world. If you did, would you ever try to return? You saw what it did to Kirito. The kid went insane, and he still cannot abandon the world, even though he has left. I would love to hear what you guys think.
Also if you are still watching the anime, tell me what you think, and ask any questions that you are confused about. Thanks for reading!

  • I cried while watching it also. I cried because of how bad Shit Art Online really was and how everyone was over hyping such a shitty anime.

  • 1. Aincrad, absolutely. There was a sense of purpose to Aincrad, not just because it was a death game, but because it was Kayaba's dream since he was very young. It was his passion, his obsession, his world. As such, it had much more intention and creation within it in comparison to ALO, made for the sake of making money, and under the table, as an experiment by those of power less than the CEO. 2. I do not believe I would be willing to throw myself into the death game as such, even with the beauty of that world. There is so much beauty in this world left to discover and appreciate that becoming a permanent resident of that world would not be as enticing as it may otherwise be. Not only that, but if it was as a non-death game, I would COMPLETELY spend ALL of my free time there, as long as there was not the issue of "you die here, you're dead." And for those that keep saying that SAO sucks, a) why are you on this page, b) the light novels are kind of better because they actually explain what's happening, and c) if you think about it more, you can realize the reason for Kayaba's creation of the death game. For example, the light of this world that he had created, his life was in that world, and no one could understand him. No one realized his dream of this world and no one lived there aside from him. He wanted others to not only appreciate the world he lived in and created, but to consider it their home as well, which is why Kirito is the main focus, as he both realizes and and is the realization of Kayaba's dream. It's honestly pretty intense, at least with that one. It's not as good with those that followed but I still think they were pretty good, as anime come.

    • SAO could have been amazing, but near the end of the first season, it turned into crap. The storytelling turns into nothing but rushed episodes that had the characters doing crap for no apparent reason and cliches everywhere. Considering that the players were trapped in SAO for two years, you'd think the first season would last for more than 13 episodes. Plus the second season ruins Asuna as a character. She goes from excellent female lead to stereotypical damsel in distress completely dependent on Kirito. SAO could have been fantastic, but it turned into an average at best complete product.

    • If SAO was focused on Klein it would have been alot better. It could have been about him and his friends forming a guild, and it would show how he lost some of his friends along the way (pic related). Kirito still could have been there, he would have just been that 'mysterious, powerful' character that shows up from time to time to help Klein. Of course, this would have meant that the first season wouldn't have ended like it did. Add some feud between his guild and the other main guild, and have them go all the way to the top floor for the final reveal. Kirito wouldn't save the day either, it'd be everyone working together like it originally should have been.

      • I'm not much of an anime kinda guy, but at a friends recommendation I watched a bit of this. I read a synopsis of it beforehand and found the premise of it to be very interesting; I quite liked the whole Fantasy RPG setting. So I started watching it, and it was pretty good. Until about episode 9 or so when the romance became utterly overbearing and I had to stop watching because it was just stupid at that point.

SAO had potential but was far too rushed to be an actually good anime, sure the animation was great but the plot was absolute shit. They had time skips to make up for poor character development, Kirito had plot armor rivaled only by Son Goku, and season 2 (Fairy Poop Online) gave me terminal retinal cancer. If it had just been season 1 and actually revolved around I don't know PUSHING UP ALL 100 FLOORS LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO and had been a longer show, I would have loved it. OT: 1: Aincrad, I find the whole divided races thing to be cancerous, I'd rather have the whole pushing to a single goal. 2: I would so go into SAO, I'd start up a nice guild and keep farming off enemies until I'm unrivaled, then become a front liner.

            • Mainly the only thing stopping me from watching this is that reviewers say that the characters are generic like how the one main girl has a potential to be a strong female lead but she just ends up being whimpy and depending on the main guy to protect her and also the story doesn't stay focused like how they never explain why the guy trapped them in the virtual world in the first place..

              • I thought SAO was great. Right until the end of Season One, at which point it turned into something that was just... Bad. I could barely even sit through the last bit of Season Two, it was pretty stupid with the whole... Well, everything.

                  Nothing like: A.
Turning Asuna, the girl loved in the first season, into nothing more than a plot device for season 2.
B.
Having your cousin want to get in your pants for no real reason.
C.
Have a bunch of other girls fall for you for no particular reason (season 1).
D. (Gun Gale Online)
Picking a sword for a weapon in a GUN game and then begin able to slice bullets in half at point blank. Yup, some guy doing a review of the novel for GGO said a lot of BS was pulled, although it is not entirely bad.
E.
Season 1: The villain having no particular reason for all the shit he did of trapping people in a videogame and having them fight for their lives.
I'm surprised, contrary to your name, you aren't being a bad OP, well done. On the note of SAO though, yeah Season 2 was where it got a little weird for me, I don't want to reiterate the spoilers, but a certain girl falling for him was a little obnoxious, and the magic part wasn't as great as how the sword skills were implemented, but still an 8.5/10 anime for me and one of the best I've ever watched.

                          • Well uh i'm on the 6th episode of SAO and it's looking pretty good. I don't really watch anime because of the ridiculous plots and the English actors piss me off but SAO hasn't pissed me off with those 2. Though it's already gotten into tentacle -blam!-. So i'm questioning it

                              • If this were another forum that was more anime and manga centric I'd say that you were a 5 or 6 out of 10 troll. However I have a feeling that your views are genuine and I know that people actually think that shit is good. This fills me with a sense of loss, anger, confusion, sadness, and just general disappointment. I don't even know how to properly respond to this. SAO truly is the twilight of anime.

Gun Gale Online is by far the best story arc imo of the entire series-if you'd like to read it i can PM you a link to an english translation.
