Hell I am drawn into a narrative in a Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy campaign (Called Die Letze Hoffnung, "The Final hope") I am doing right now. I am in charge of the leading elements of the 116th Panzer Division in a desperate counter attack towards Avranches to exploit an exposed flank in the Americans advance out of Saint Lo. All of the story is contained in the developers notes, and the briefing in text (And of course in the maps). I am on the first mission and already it has a solid story based in historical fact, the story so far fleshes out the characters (The officers in charge, some our fanatical -godwinslaw!-, others normal army troops that despise Hitler, but see this attack as a real possibility to give Germany more time) one has lost his brother in the eastern front, the Panzer commander has fought in Caen, all believable but fictional characters placed in a real historical event. Knowing my history, and the designer telling me as well this attack fails historically, but I have a chance to succeed. This simple text based briefing has a far more interesting story than most AAA game I have ever played, and this campaign i am doing wasn't even created by the dev team, just by some community member. Its a shame this game (And the Combat Mission series as a whole) will remain for the most part hidden from most people. It is a hard core military tactical level RTS game that requires extreme patience, the application of real life tactics and those used back then, and a lot of thought. I am not here to force the game down peoples throats (GO TRY IT EVEN IF YOU KNOW YOU'LL HATE IT) the game, but it is safe to say it doesn't take an extremely popular game nor a fictional story to make a great story.

Have you played any of the games in the Brothers in Arms series? One of my favorites

Of course, "Road to Hill 30" is one of my favorite games of all time. It tells a real story in an amazing way, and the gameplay was great. You had to use real tactics to fight the Germans and it was a legitimate challenge in places. Remember! "Find them!, Fix them!, Flank them!, Finish them!"

We should be friends haha. I miss Allen and Garnett, I really do like how you see Matt change over the course of the game and all the events are factual. Nothing in the game that happens feels fake, except for 1 or 2 parts in Hell's Highway Earned in Blood is my favorite

  • Hah tell me about it, my friends don't have the same interest I do in World war 2 history, if I began to tell them what a Tiger tank was, they would probably fall asleep on me! I can tell we would probably get along pretty well. As for Brothers in Arms as a whole, it definitely amazing to see the characters change and react to whats happening. I still remember "Coles Charge" over that foggy sunken Causeway ("Purple Heart Lane I believe it was called") to capture a farm house. Colonel Cole earned the Medal of Honor pulling off that attack, and sadly he never lived to get it I believe. I also remember that poor bastard getting hit by one of the few German air attacks on the allies in Normandy, very sad.

I had to explain to my friend what a panzer was and the diffrence between a panzershrek and the panzer tank. Then he was like so was the tiger like the best tank and I was like you don't even know about the Panther. Sexy ass tank right there. And yes LT Colonel Cole didn't live to receive the medal. Rumors are that the next BIA is in Bastogne which has me soooo excited, my favorite battle. Market Garden was awesome for me but now Bastogne is like oh my god. It's also hinted when Kevin asks Baker how he feels about snow at the end of Hell's Highway. And I'll miss Corrion :,(. And Red :(

  • I feel your pain, and I honestly can't wait for the next installment in BIA to be the Battle of the Bulge. There are a lot of interesting things to do with that material right there.

They can do so much, being in a foxhole as German mortars rain down on the forests, holding back the panzer divisions and fighting in the forests. Alot can be done, and it will look phenomenal on next gen.
