Cross Platform Saving

As we all know, Destiny is going to be put on as many platforms that Bungie can make possible. Hopefully, there will be a PC version in the times to come. So, let's create a scenario. I make a character on my brand new Xbox One (or Ps4, 360, whatever). Now, this character becomes super powerful, and I've invested dozens of hours into making him the persona he is today. BOOM! Destiny comes out for PC (or I wanna switch consoles or something). So, I want to get it for PC instead of my measly console. But wait! You have a spectacular character that you've put many tens of hours into crafting! What happens to him? Will Bungie have a cross platform sort of system in order for me to transfer my beloved creation? Or am I doomed to be stuck to one single console? Alright, thanks for bearing with me there. That's the best I could get the point across. I suspect Bungie will be operating Destiny in a sort of, cloud based system. This would allow players to break the platform barrier, and would make Destiny far more convenient for everybody. What do you think? Is it possible?

  • Simple Answer: No. Complex Answer: As it stands now, if you create a character on your Xbox 360 for a cross-platform game, regardless of who developed or published the game, all information is stored on servers dedicated to the Xbox 360, and the same with the PS3. These servers are designed and built using code specific to the console that they service, therefore all character information would be in the program code for the console that you created the character on, and transferring a character from one platform to another would require a translation from one set of code to another...now here's the problem...Microsoft own the copyright to their code while Sony own the copyright to their code and God knows who owns the PC code...a translation program would require a single entity/developer/program to have, use and alter all three codes and to be honest, can you imagine that ever happening? Because here's the thing, Bungie LICENSE the code used to make their game work on the Xbox and PS3 from Microsoft and Sony, and because your character is created using specific code, transferring it to another platform would require you to alter that code and change it to fit the other platform...altering code...altering intellectual property...copyright infringement...can you imagine that being authorised? Never mind the fact that the platform you started on would potentially be losing out on revenue from online purchases to your new platform, so they'd essentially be helping their rival to make money while they lose money...can you see that happening? Now imagine that, somehow, Bungie manage to take your character information and have it so that there is NO platform specific code anywhere in there. You essentially have a character that COULD be dropped onto any platform and played instantly without any problems...you still have a physicality problem. A Bungie employee, or whoever oversees their servers must physically download your character from the server to a form of mobile storage, walk across the room or over to the building with the servers for your new platform, physically connect that storage device, download your character, integrate it into the new server so that your story is at the same point, your inventory contains all of the items it did, your in-game achievements are registered properly, and so on and so forth...you see the problem? How much of that information WOULD contain platform specific code? So basically, if every platform owner authorises and licenses a third party to alter and change and transmute their intellectual property, then yes, you could theoretically transfer from one platform to another. But as it stands now...don't count on it...

  • That'd be awesome! But I think that'll only be possible if our info is stored in the Bungie servers and not the Playstation/Xbox servers.

  • I hope this is possible. I'm going through the same thing with Borderlands 2 right now; poured many hours into PS3 version, but have been playing on PC for the past month. From time to time, I'll wish I had my other characters and their loot... and their golden keys.

  • In order for this to be possible you must create a new account with bungie. By this I mean that all accounts will be housed by bungie and will not be directly linked to your console account like most multiplayer games. This seems very likely considering each account can house 4 characters. I think we can assume we can give each one a different name which would confirm that your destiny character will not be 100% directly linked to your console account. Once this is possible it will allow them if they so choose to dedicate the resources to create the full world they are talking about and have cross console gameplay.

    • Let's hope we can upload our characters to a server, so that they can be accessed from any console anywhere.

    • Hopefully Bungie would have enough power to store your character data

      • Bungie have mentioned in a past mail sack I think that you will be able to access the character you have created (upto 4 without paying) from all platforms, and would work by using your email and so on like creating a new account in an MMO sort of thing. So you would log in to your console, be it XBL or PSN and then use the assigned email to log in to Bungie's servers. By also doing it this way they could then go on to implement cross platform play. But either way if you want to know more I would go ask Destiny Updates. He covers everything Destiny and I've been subscribed to him (on YouTube) since around November time last year, and he replies to your almost everytime. So don't be scared to ask him.

      • Technically possible, yes. Though I suppose you'd have to give up that exclusive content if you went from PS4 to another system.

      • I believe there was a statement saying how b.next was packed with all kinds of features, and what they did with it was their choice when someone asked this question in a mail sack

        • Bungie would seem to have their own dedicated servers, but unless it's a single server for all platforms it wont happen. If 360/XBone share a server, PS3/4 share a server but don't interact then I see no way they'd transfer characters just for the time and effort it would take. It's like MMOs (who use the server structure Destiny is), you can't transfer an EU character/account to the NA version of the game because they're different servers. In the end it'll really boil down to if they use separate servers for Sony and Microsoft or not. I personally don't think they'll use a single unified server.

        • I doubt it. If developers don't let me switch my saved file from Xbox MW2 to playstation, I doubt they'll let it happen here. Now, what I want to know is if I buy a 360 version of Destiny, create a character and so forth, then I decide to buy the Xbox One and Destiny again, will my character transfer over. If so, I'll buy Destiny twice. Probably more than twice if they come out with a legendary edition.

          • Cross-platform saving is more likely. Especially considering the game is ring released cross-gen.

          • I certainly hope so! I've heard talk about it, but was assuming that it would be for Ps3 to Ps4, or 360 to One. If they do allow us to transfer our save to pc, Bungie's got me buying this game twice.
