...When someone just says the word cartoon? Seriously, they will go to great lengths and details to prove them wrong. Who gives a shit if someone calls it a cartoon?
Just reading the comments on the video made me sick inside.

I don't get bothered by it.

It's not really a big deal, but there is kind of a difference. Cartoons are mainly targeted at children while animes have a diverse range. It wouldn't be a good idea to let a 7 year old watch Attack on Titan or something like that. For the most part when I think of the two I separate them because of their origin. To say something like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away are the same as let's say Lion King or Aladdin isn't right for the simple fact that they come from two different cultures. I hope that gets my point across.

Because the name cartoon implies something childish and juvenile. Anime can be that, but it can be other things. And would you appreciate it if someone implied that your favorite thing was childish and juvenile?

i see my dildo string is still hanging from his thigh This guy makes the best commentaries, its just hilarious to hear him say shit.

It doesn't bug me, but it think it's probably about semantics. When I hear cartoon I think of English shows like Ed Edd & Eddy and Courage the Cowardly Dog (Archer being a notable exception), but when I hear anime what I imagine is an animated show with a much wider audience ranging from childish like K-ON to mature like Hellsing. Also association can irritate people, I dislike when people immediately ask me about tentacle -blam!- when they figure out I live in Japan. So grouping someone with the childish connotation that comes with the term cartoon can make people feel as if your belittling them.

I aint even mad

Anime is just a medium for visual storytelling. So are cartoons, so is live action, so is stop-motion, so is CGI, so are sock puppets. If the story is a good one and the presenter chooses a method that fits how they want to visually tell the story? As long as the story, plot, characters, etc. is properly done, the medium is the creators choice and decision.

Edited by Simseo: 7/11/2013 2:24:38 PMBecause they can't accept that anime is for kids, just like cartoons.

Probably because they know you're doing it just to be an asshole.

If you really want to know and are actually willing to listen and not judge, they are two different things. Cartoons are something that is seen as something children related, with minimal plot or storyline. An anime is something for all ages and is a Japanese art that has full depth of story just like any normal tv show would. If someone calls your xbox or ps3 a nintendo, like parents who dont understand games, would you not be frustrated?

It's because they have ADHD and something as utterly dumb as anime is somehow attractive to them because of it. Its just the same thing with people who actually liked Halo 2...

The same reasons fans of anything become defensive about something they are passionate about. Just other peoples opinions of any genre they do not like will raise hackles.

It's probably because most people attempt to use the word "cartoon" as a word to explain why anime is dumb or is for kids or something. Also, youtube comments. People who post in them are dumbasses.
