I believe the Exo are going to be the resurrected dead. Humanity had its back against a wall, they needed more man-power, so the next logical choice was to take the dead, dying or volunteers and turn them into men (and woman) of metal and electricity to fight anew. The dark and sinister-ness comes from the fact that they are cybernetic undead, fighting with the zeal of people born again. Their purpose is to destroy the enemies of man-kind with extreme prejudice. However... they seem conflicted. Questions of who... what am I? The image I provided evokes feelings of focus, rest, but he also seems transfixed and concerned. It's amazing how a metal face can still show emotion. But, in the end, regardless of what they become they will forever be remembered as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and lived to pay it again and again. They will never be forgotten, their names etched in the halls of history, hallowed in time. It's almost beautiful when you think about it.

  • That's a very compelling idea, and terrifically expressed, but my two cents would be that "sinister" seems to connote a malicious intent rather than just a hostility toward the enemy. I'm on board with the cyber/exoskeleton premise, but rather than having been resurrected by humanity, maybe they could be a group that perceived of themselves as a next phase of human potential. In addition to "exoskeleton" the prefix also conjures thoughts of exobiology, or even genetic exons, so perhaps they experimented on themselves with the intent of surpassing the rest of humanity---or even dominating them---but when the Collapse came, they were nearly destroyed and were obligated to rejoin humanity in an alliance of convenience or else face destruction.  The "isolated hero" angle is great, but it kind of makes them almost too heroic---too easy to celebrate over the Humans. But if they were once sinisterly over-ambitious, there's a lot more potential for dramatic  conflict as the series unfolds. A lot more uncertainty that could contribute to some fantastic plot lines. It would also add a lot of depth in terms of whether some of them regret their ambition and some of them still hold on to it.  In any case, kudos to Bungie for getting this much speculation out of us with so few words.

  • I háve started a short story for my Exo character, who is initially mortally wounded in a skirmish and then wakes up in a hospital bed and finds out, to his horror that he is a metallic machine now. The continued story is action but filled with existential questions and the mental struggle for my character and the loss of his loved ones who only knows that he died on Mars. So yes, my thoughts are that the Exo's are something like that. Not necessarily awakened from death, but people who are seriously injured but are deemed vital to the defence and war effort so that they are being encased in a Exo shell.

I would like to read your short story when you get it finished. I like the direction and to be honest, I hope that your story may get some attention from Bungie. Mostly, because I would like to see this issue addressed. I have to say that I wasn't expecting this level of a response, but I do enjoy the attention it has gotten. I'll see you star side, comrade.

  • This is what I was thinking. The name Exo automatically made me think of an exoskeleton. But an exoskeleton for what? The consciousness of a person. They are made unfeeling by the relentless passage of time, having to watch their comrades die on the battlefield while they are simply repaired and sent back into the fray.

  • I actually think the opposite, they aren't rendered unfeeling, but they feel the pain worse than anyone, worse than any other human being could comprehend. The guilt of having the strongest bodies, the strongest resolve, but you still can't save everyone and you blame yourself for countless deaths that you were close too. I like your idea, I really do,but this is just my opinion.

  • Actually I really like this view. There probably would be a strong sense of guilt associated with living forever while everyone else died. Very good point.

  • I have a lot of sympathetic views to the psychological state of characters or individuals that share common ground with the Exo, or at least what I believe they will be like. It's like the Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000, occasionally Captain America, even the mighty Spartans from Bungie's own Halo lore. They are all so strong, so brave, so couragous, so valiant... and yet they suffer more than anyone else because they feel the pain thousands and thousands of time over for not being able to save everyone and watching as their brethren perish or entire populaces get destroyed even though they should have the power to stop it. And they can't. It hurts just thinking about it.

  • You know... When you think about it... That's one of the most awesome concept arts ever... I mean LOOK at how BOSS he looks. "Ah.. Y'know... Just tired after destroying all the fallen with my FISTS."

Only instead of selling your soul to dark, ancient Gods in exchange for victory and immortality only to be tricked into becoming a soulless machine hell-bent on the eradication of organic life to feed your Gods' growing hunger for souls and "life energies", you are exchanging your dead broken body to defend Humanity once more... It's actually more like being a space marine of high stature, getting mortally wounded, then being interned into a dreadnought for the rest of your days.

  • A bio-mechanical seat for the soul of the deceased. Shackled to their new bodies by self sacrifice, will and the power of the Traveler, certainly has the right frisson of the sinister to it. The further from their original humanity they get the darker they become, or perhaps it's their tireless devotion to war that takes it's toll.
