I think those are normal traits in a dog. The first one is he just wants to play/have attention and the second he is patrolling his territory (By that I mean the pack's territory and I'm guessing you would be the Alpha)
Are you keeping him as a pet or a guard dog?

Pet primarily. He is pretty protective! When ever the trashmen come, he wants a piece of them!

Hehe, yeah. Alsatians are pretty protective to say the least. There is a family near where I live that keeps a pack of them, 4-5 in their yard. If you are walking across the street opposite their house it's like you set off a grenade or something o.O they go apeshit. Lovely dogs when they know people though, very smart and loyal. I'd say those quirks are just a part of your dog and ironing them out might make him a bit less friendly towards you. Perseverance with telling the dog a room you want them to go into I guess. It's taken about 4 years but my whippets now go into the lounge or go outside when I point and say the word. But if they don't want to move you have to get in there and pick them up lol. Laziest dogs on the planet.

Mine does that too. When I invite him inside, he comes, and when I say no and point out. He leaves. He does obey me when ever I tell him to not do something. Like not peeing on my tires.
