My guess is that they are similar to daleks or other handymen in that they are damaged humans/human consciousness uploaded or built into a protective exoskeleton.

hmm, interesting... and if humans have that kind of technological prowess, shouldn't the other alien races have it as well? Maybe the Vex are some sort of alien Exo-type...

Now that's an interesting idea. On a similar note i can't wait to discover the vex back story in game, who or what created them , if they didn't "upgrade" themselves so to speak, how time travel works for them, and why they are here.
