i would probably only use Iambic Pentameter if i was writing a poem about horses.

Ironically, that's the line that helped me (after saying it aloud a thousand or so times) get a feel for what iambic pentameter sounds like.

ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum. it sounds like a horse in gallop :) good undertone and subliminal pacing for the reader.

to answer your questions: i always had trouble with essays on analyzing poems and books. yes, and it didnt go well. i like my poems to rhyme, so i became quite mad when i wanted to say something but couldnt covey it correctly. no i dont mind Shakespeare, his works are quite good when you are not forced to read them.
