The Nextbox is $500, let's see how good of a gaming PC you can build for $500

If you guys want to check out my OPINIONS/pros and cons on the Nextbox, go to this thread right here and you can read through my thread and discuss the Nextbox. Now onto the topic at hand. The Nextbox will be priced at $500. What kind of gaming PC can you get for $500? Well I'm about to show you. This build NOT include the following things: 1) DVD drive/Blu-ray drive - Because now-a-days on PCs you rarely use them, and you can easily setup a PC without one. 2) Operating system. Although if you want a good, free one, I recommend Ubuntu or Mint (because Steam for Linux is only compatible on those Linus distros). 3) Peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor) $500 gaming PC CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1045T 2.7GHz 6-Core Processor ($89.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M LX PLUS Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($52.98 @ Outlet PC) Memory: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.98 @ NCIX US) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.98 @ Outlet PC) Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 1GB Video Card ($149.99 @ Newegg) Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 650W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($53.99 @ Newegg) Now, since the Xbox LIVE subscription is making a return, let's factor that in. Going at the CURRENT XBL SUBSCRIPTION PRICE (which is $60 for 1 year), you can get this PC. $560 gaming PC CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1045T 2.7GHz 6-Core Processor ($89.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M LX PLUS Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($52.98 @ Outlet PC) Memory: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.98 @ NCIX US) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.98 @ Outlet PC) Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB Video Card ($207.55 @ Newegg) Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 650W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($53.99 @ Newegg) Now, that last was for the price of the Nextbox + a 1 subscription to Xbox LIVE, but we all know that once that runs out, you'll have to pay another $60, and so on. So for those extra years of XBL Gold, you can build a much better gaming PC. So ya...I just wanted to make this thread for those of you who are now interested in PC gaming because of the recent Nextbox news. I hope this helped you guys!

  • I think the big factor here is the user base. Obviously, the average user isn't going to know how to build a PC, much less know how to properly troubleshoot, etc. When building a PC, it's certainly worth it, but it's only worth it because I have the know-how to make it work. Cracked Version of Win 7 Ultimate with updates enabled: $0 Torrent games to try-before-buy: $0 But why can I do that? Experience. Experience takes time, and time is money.

Mouse, keyboard, dvd drive, OS, and a couple other things you left out there - these are not things you can let out. The xbox has a controller, so you must include a mouse and keyboard. The xbox has a DVD drive (and to be honest, unless you have some technical know-how installing windows without a DVD drive would be near impossible, and consoles are just as much for people without any tech knowledge). And most importantly, the OS. You cannot play most games on a free OS. It's just not possible. You also cannot legally transfer an OEM OS license, so you'll need to purchase windows. The specs of the machines you're putting together also would be worse than the rumored specs of the next xbox and PS4. The sales are good if you routinely buy games you don't need, but XBL has been offering a number of sales with that of frequency akin to steam sales recently. Also, as for the "Nextbox news," it's all rumors and you should be ashamed of yourself for listening to them and further propagating them.

The thing is, the reason that in many cases consoles give you better value, and pull every ounce of power out of it, is because the specifications are all exactly the same. Developers know what hardware they are developing for so they are able to pull every last ounce of power out of those consoles. Granted, many developers (Crytek, DICE, etc) have made PC's real powerhouses for their games, that is not the norm when it comes to other developers. I would compare consoles to an iPhone in the mobile space and Android to PC's because while Android is a much more powerful platform as a whole and more customizable, many developers only develop on iOS because it is easier since they know what the specs are for what they are developing allowing them to pull every ounce of power out of that device. There are pros and cons to both for sure, so arguing that one is better than the other is a broken argument. They both are good in their own ways.

    • Absolutely MUST have an OS. Does BF3, Crysis, Simcity, anything big really run on linux? No. Also, in 6/7 years time a 7870 won't run anything. Original xbox 360 had an ATI X1800Pro, so pretty much an AMD 7870. Therefore you would need 2 of those or more in order to count. CPU is also insanely weak and probably already bottlenecks the 7870, so by the time another GPU card is put in, the processor will need replacing, and with it the mobo. So triple the cost really. Plus a keyboard and mouse of suitable quality/a gamepad too. And a mic. Thread is a waste of time. Let it die.

      • Who said it will be $500? IGN? Speculation makes you look really dumb, you know that right? Especially since Microsoft has announced the #XboxReveal date. Your getting worked up over something that is not real. Time will tell.

The Porsche 911 has a MSRP of $84,300. I could buy and assemble a kit car or modify a cheaper sports car in my garage for a small fraction of that price, and if I did choose to spend that much money, the car I built would likely have a larger, more powerful engine, better tires, a top-notch racing frame and suspension, and would be custom tailored to my needs and desires (such as not including features I don't really use, like mirrors on the sun visor or FM radio). Now why is it, you think, that I still would prefer to purchase the Porsche if I had the money to do so?

        • Then you add in the OS, another $100. Blue ray: $40 Keyboard:$40 Mouse:$10 Normally I side with PCs, but I don't like the fact that you also left out these things. You should also take note that you will need some sort of PC anyway, so why not get a gaming PC instead of a PC+ a console.

Dude, I got a gaming PC, and you pretty much have to include Windows OS in the price. There's hardly any games for Linux on Steam, and there sure as hell isn't the most popular ones. It's not gonna be much of a gaming system comparable to console if it's on Linux. Also, you should include the disk drive. You pretty much need one unless you purposefully go out of your way to not use one. It's $15, not a big deal. Don't try to make PC sound cheaper than it is. Although, you can make a much better PC than a console and the games are MUCH cheaper on PC, and more fun with mods. Also, if you're comparing PC to console you got to include peripherals. Xbox has them already in, included in the price.

          • Technically Console manufacturers can build a stronger system if you break down the prices because they manufacture in bulk and get discounts accordingly. This doesn't mean that there aren't more powerful rigs out there obviously, but a $500 dollar xbox is going to be more powerful overall than a $500 dollar PC that you built yourself because of markups.

          • A copy of windows and a blu ray drive would add about $140 to that at least. In order to have an accurate comparison I think that should be included.

OP tries to make a good point, but be realistic here. You need to factor in the cost of an OS, at least windows 7 pro. You need to include a dvd-rw drive (which is only $15). You need to include peripherals like a monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. (Which you can still buy for cheap, or spend bigger to get better quality) And ughh, micro-ATX motherboard? Even if i was going budget i wont use a micro-atx board. But should anyone buy a Radeon 7800 or 7900 series graphics card they get a bunch of AAA title games for free. Bioshock infinite Deus Ex: uman revolution Crysis 3 Tomb raider

          • Of course OP has no idea what the final specs of the Nextbox will be nor does he know how to take optimization into account since consoles can provide vastly better gaming experiences with optimized cheaper parts.

          • Unless it changes to include PC, then one word: Destiny. For now I'm staying with the 360, but if Destiny is eventually a Nextbox exclusive... I'm buying it.

          • Here's my verdict I'll probably have the money to get this when it comes out, my friends probably won't I'll wait for them to get it, and then I'll get it If they have no plans to get it, then I won't get it unless something amazing is announced Once again, this sounds like a waste of time and money to me

Your earlier thread is full of a bunch of bullshit rumors that have been circulating for about a year now.

                  • Have to put it together, short lifespawn, and I don't already have a decade of my time invested into the system. But fun fact: Let's see what else you could get with $500. Like, food. Or most of a month's rent. These are good things that I will be spending my money on instead. So both systems and their overpriced-ness can suck it.
