Madoka, a guilty pleasure? I always enjoyed Madoka as a fairly well done deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre, which is exactly how I would explain it. I mean, I could see how it could be a guilty pleasure depending on what you enjoyed about it, in which case "Ewwwwwwww".

Well, if you read that part of the post, you'd understand what I was saying. Explaining to your friends why you enjoy Death Note or FMA would be quite easy. Explaining why you like Madoka wouldn't be (to the average person).

  • It's not too hard. Tons of other works have done what Madoka's done for Magical Girls. Without even going in depth, I could just say it's like (some semi-common examples) Watchmen to superheroes, Evengelion to mecha, Ender's Game to child heroes, Kickass to vigilantes, Lord of the Flies to children's adventure, Bioshock to shooters, The Incredibles to superheroes, and so on. "You know how Watchmen turned the idea of super heroes on its head? Yeah, kind of like that." It's really not that hard to get the general idea across.
