Why North Korea is a force to be reckoned with.

I know most of you know about North Korean military abilities, but putting it all into numbers really makes you think about their capabilities. For those of you that don't, still think we can roll right over top of North Korea?

  • No. If North Korea launched a nuke on the U.S., we would wipe their insignificant little country off the face of the earth within a few hours. NK should probably count the cost before they attempt something like that.

  • I probably already commented in this thread when it started, but North Korea does not have the logistics to keep all of those functioning for more than 30 days. Not to mention that fleet is pretty much worthless.

        • North Korea is only a threat at the start, they can't maintain a long time threat. Its why they are alive, because if anyone hits them they would start killing innocents by the thousands, basically trying to take as many people down with them.

        • North Korea says that it will be an "all-out war." That is to say, an all out war until they run out of money which will be like in 5 days.

        • Without Chinese support, North Korea will be crushed. If China gets into the fight, things could get interesting.

                • You should imagine what the US armed forces visualized in this manner would look like. And then also consider that simply comparing numbers doesn't tell nearly the whole story. How many of the DPRK's ships and subs are actually fully-functional and properly maintained?

                    • We don't really know what North Korea is capable of because they're so closed off from the rest of the world besides china. China does not support their aggression and would not assist them in a war with the U.S. We don't even know what we're capable of in terms of destruction.

                      • Why haven't we bombed them? Because China will get involved..... Don't be fooled, they're just saying they won't so UN won't sanction them before wartime. But they'll get involved after US invades N Korea

                          • I look at that and I can't help but think it's really nothing threatening to the average first world nation, they can count the number of ships and air craft in the hundreds... What's more North Korea is incredibly closed off, they don't have enough resources to support their population, let alone enough to support a war, as I recall the only two allies they've ever had were the Soviet Union, which of course no longer exists, and China who've already condemned their "Troublemaking". Put simply they have an impressive standing force, relative to other countries of the same technological level, on paper but in reality they're not much more than a wasp threatening a wolf.

                          • And you wonder how NK can maintain such a huge army. Oh wait. Their country is in borderline poverty and famine.

                          • First, great post. I haven't seen a news article go into such detail before, so I'm glad that some media outlets are attempting to delve into their capabilities. Second, North Korea has an extremely outdated navy and air force. I mean, quite honestly, both would be destroyed fairly quickly in war. The only threat is the AN-8, a small twin engine plane that is undetectable on radar. It can be used to deliver SOF into the ROK. The same goes for their submarine flotillas.

They're using 50's-era naval ships and boats. Nothing they have today can evade modern radar or tracking systems, and head-on their entire fleet could be destroyed easily. They could do damage in a very short window, and that's the concern: that they'll just fire everything they've got at anyone nearby before the dozens of ships and hundreds of weapons aimed at their military infrastructure can do anything. Unfortunately there's no proven method to defeat artillery in-flight, but South Korea is practically riddled with shelters and they practice for this. They've got planes, tanks, ships, and subs, but they also have a peasant military with uneducated, likely untrained force.
