In a billion years the sun will expand into a red giant and devour the earth in cleansing flame.

Longer than that. The actual absorption of the Earth into the outer layers of the Sun won't take place for 4.5 or so billion years, but Earth's ecosystem will be absolutely ravaged by its gradual increase in luminosity within 600 million years.
