Wikipedia makes list of Hoaxes posted on the site

Well that's quite a big list, I guess it proves you can't believing everything you read on there. I still use it to research or look up a topic since a good 95% of it is fact. (Backed by Encyclopedia Britannica) What do you guys think? Found any good hoaxes in the list or somewhere else?

  • This is why you NEVER use wikipedia directly for a source. Th trick is to go onto wikipedia, find your article, and then click the link to the source. Provided that its a good source (use best judgement) then use it. But never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never use wkipedia as a direct source. I know several professors that fail a paper, regardless of quality, if they see wikipedia in the bibliography.

  • That list is nowhere near complete. For example, Colbert has a long history of Wiki pranks.

    • I trust the site if whatever is said has a source right next to each claim. Usually every single article I've ever looked up has trustable sources. So yeah it bothers me when teachers say it's unreliable even though they list the sources on there. I'll just use Wikipedia to find the sources and say I got them from there if any teachers ask me anymore where I got my info.

      • You're just realizing now you can't believe everything on that site?...................... ROFLMAO! When your teachers told you not to use that site as a credible source; did you think they were just blowin smoke up your ass or something? Wikipedia is literally the worst site for info.

        • I have yet to find bad info on wikipedia. I'm starting to think the hoax is everyone telling me that wikipedia is full of hoaxes.

        • I recall in middle school attempting to edit the Earth article to read "Mostly Harmless" only to see a comment block at the top of the page cautioning vandals that "harmless" and "mostly harmless" had been done to death, we weren't original, and that they were very tired of reverting it and that we should find some other page to deface in an original way.

If you know what you're doing, you can get a great initial understanding of a subject by reading the article, and then select sources that are linked for your actual references. People are foolish to use it as a source itself, but it practically hands you acceptable ones on a silver platter at the bottom of the article.
