Discuss all things Destiny.

You're losing some class Bnet.

We need to have a family discussion. Put away the poop thread and let Vien down from the rafters; we all need to talk about this together. For the last few months, there has been a lot of lively discussion about 343i and their first game, Halo 4. We've praised it and damned it, which is perfectly normal and something you would expect to see on any forum. Unfortunately, a trend is developing in the bowels of this new beast, and it is not representative of who we are as a community. In some ways, it's to be expected. There have always been those among us who feel the need to show their support for Bungie by proclaiming the superiority of their products (again, perfectly normal), and at the moment we have little to shout about. Such restlessness before the Destiny reveal is to be expected, and normally I wouldn't worry about this at all. However, I've seen this trend ruin forums before. The trend I've been referring to is the excessive, played-out, and unrelenting criticism of 343i as a company. The intrinsic notion that anything they produce is shit pervades much of this forum. It's gotten to the point that uncreative users with nothing else to say can post topics with consisting of little more than "lolol343sucksbecausex" (hashtag that if you want; I know someone will), and people will blithely reply to them with similar comments. The point at which hate on a company becomes as commonplace and accepted as "lol" is what I'm concerned about. I've recently seen another community greatly reduced by this behavior. For the community in question, the entity that was being attacked was actually the creator of the game the community was built around. It would be like if #bungiesux became the running theme of the site, which made it a little more awkward than it is in our situation. The forums became filled with 90% of the users contributing nothing more than re-bleetings of the criticisms they saw gaining attention. Soon enough, any actual discussion died off, and the forum became a cesspool of whiny entitled gits pantomiming the actions of more popular whiny entitled gits. This is what inspired me to make this thread: I've seen users on this forum doing similar things for attention. Now I don't think Bnet needs to worry about a similar fate. The new forum features allow us to filter content in ways I've never seen on a forum, so if things ever got to that level (which I sincerely doubt they will) we would still have a way around it (maybe you can tout the new site features if you're so inclined). In addition, the portion of the community taking part in this behavior is so small to the whole, that I don't think we'd need to worry about it even if we had the old forums. That said, it doesn't make us look good. If the only way we can think of to promote the company we love is to blindly attack another, then we don't look like a community worth investing in. Soon enough Destiny will be here, and we'll have plenty to shout about. But if this blind adherence to negativity sticks, we could be stuck with it for a long time. I want you to think about the new users that will be here when Destiny picks up steam. Do you really think they'll want to stick around if all we do is spout repetitive hate? If you want to help Bungie, make this community look like something better than the rest of the forums out there. We already are of course, but some people need a little help seeing it ;) So in closing, feel free to have critical, even negative discussion of 343i, but don't make it a site meme. It's boring, tacky, and available on plenty of other sites. Thank you for your time.

  • TL;DR the only good thing about Halo 4 is that the BR is back.

  • But hating on stuff makes me look good and makes me seem cool to everybody else! Why would I ever stop that since the only thing in this world that matters is how cool I look to forum dwellers?

    • I like Halo 4. The Campaign kept me hooked from the start. Has anyone else heard the rumor the MC wont be in Halo 5 due to the events of Halo 4?

      • Tide goes in. Tide goes out. Like it has ever since we had oceans. Such is the way of complaining about Halo as well.

        • The root of this attitude may be the fact that we're on Bungie's site. Most people (I'm not saying all, calm yo tits) joined up as Halo fans, and by the time keys to Halo were handed over to 343i, many had evolved into fans of Bungie. When these Bungie fans attempted to make a home on the Waypoint forums, they didn't have that same sense of community there. And when things started happening to Halo 4 itself that people didn't like, they felt that their outcry was left unheard on the Waypoint forums, so they come back here because they know that there are at least like-minded individuals here, even if their complaints will do nothing when put on these forums. Yes, there are some pretty tacky threads on the subject, but keep in mind that this is especially personal for people who have been Halo and Bungie fans on these forums. It's still not okay, but I get why that attitude is blatantly here.

          • Actually, I would think that slamming a "rival" company while praising the "parent" company, would only bring a community closer. It's like the drill-sergeant effect. All the soldiers become united in their hate for the sergeant. That being said, I think Halo 4 is a great game, and 343 did admirably on it.

          • I know of another community who died out partially because they would just slam the creators of the game they were built around too. I agree with you. It makes this community feel rather undesirable to be on, and I highly doubt that anyone here wants to scare members away. Good post.

          • I think the criticism of 343 is stupid, because it's the wrong damn place to do it. 343i won't see what someone says here. I get that most people complain just to complain, but really guys, take it to waypoint at least. Once Halo 5 comes out, we'll see what 343 is all about. I don't blame them if they make generic games though, Halo isn't their idea, and it isn't their baby. It's kind of like a child some random neighbors are taking care of while the parents go off to Vegas and have fun. Except they never return.

              • Personally I enjoyed Halo 4. I can understand some of the criticism it gets, but I won't stop loving it and all things Halo. It's a pity I haven't had much time to play it lately.

              • I personally liked 343i's work on Halo 4, but all this hate is nothing out of the ordinary; the Bungie community is so involved with Halo that of course 343 hate will be commonplace here. The way I see it, people have hated on Bungie just as much for other Halo games. There will always be people that dislike a game, the only reason this hate is worth any mentioning more than previous hate is because the community is bored, with nothing about Destiny to talk about. After Destiny is revealed, you can expect to see a lot less bashing, with peak bashing only happening around the launch of a new Halo.

Good post and I agree. I regret once being part of the crowd who'd jump at the chance to berate a whole company of people on behalf of my frustrations. Yea I was disappointed and sure I didn't understand why they built things a certain way, but at the end of the day it's real time, real work, and real effort going into these projects. Respectful criticism is way more appropriate than the trending "HURR DEY ALL R DOWN CINDROME" I have my own opinion of certain games, but I'm also somebody who associates with the creative field, so it is never right to chastise them outright over what could be an experiment gone wrong or just a different vision. As the saying goes, hate the statue, not the carver. In the particulars, 343 has a long way to go (and so does Bungie in several ways), but I don't think they deserve the hate they have gotten.

                    • Personally I don't think anyone here will result to saying Destiny suck just for attention. As for people bashing 343i, I thought that 343i was banning anyone who takled negatively against 343i and Halo4, and all those who couldn't speak their minds on 343i forums found haven within our fourms. Will this cumulate into Bungie.net's demise, no I don't think so, it is just a trend that will pass in time.
