Do "assault weapons" bans work? A statistician's view.
Now let’s look at the shaded region on the plot, which is the time the Orwellian-named “Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act”, i.e. “‘Assault’3 Weapons Ban”, was in force, from 13 September 1994 until the same date in 2004. There does not appear to be much correlation between this ban and the homicide rate: homicides both decrease and increase during the time which it was in force.
Much more at the link above. In short, the 1994 assault weapons ban accomplished nothing that can be discerned from looking at various trends in violent crimes. And yet we're being told that it is the solution (to what problem?). *sigh*

 • People who want to do illegal things with those weapons will just get them illegally. Not only that, but I could buy a simple high-powered rifle which is exactly the same as an assault weapon, only without the special additions onto it. Same bullets, same power, just looks different and doesn't have a couple of nice things attached. I'll say it once and continue to say it, I'm all for banning automatic weapons. We don't need machine guns. But, banning these types of weapons do nothing. I'm also for tighter control. Nothing wrong with being a little more secure. However, these weapons aren't even the most used in crimes. Those guns are typically handguns. This will effectively do nothing but piss people off.
