They just need to future proof the consoles. They didn't with this gen, and look how far it went even then. With modern tech, and future proofing in mind...they could easily last 10 years just fine.

Future proofing in technology related devices just doesn't work. Especially when your goal is performance.

I remember reading somewhere that somebody from Microsoft or Sony or somewhere said that this new console generation can easily last 10 years or longer.

I think 5 years more and we'll have next gen consoles.

Why would they want that? If they can (like Apple) make a new gen. every few years or so, people will buy it.

If they keep coming out with new systems, game developers wont have time to really use the potential of the console. Think about how some recent 360 games look compared to early 360 games, they're still pushing the limits of the console. Developers need time to make quality games, and stretching out the console lifespan is the best way to give them that time. Plus, Microsoft and Sony make more money from games than from consoles. Not much of an incentive to put a ton of research into new hardware.
