I'm still curious as to why people want to own assault weapons in the first place.

  • Because they are fun! Most people don't need an SUV, they could just drive a sedan with 4 wheel drive, but they buy an SUV anyhow.

  • Assault Weapon = " Black scary looking gun". By the definition of an Assault weapon, my .22 pistol and rifle would be considered as such. The stupid term deals with how it looks rather than how it functions.

  • "Assault weapons" are semiautomatic firearms with certain arbitrary "military style" features. Under the old Assault Weapons Ban, you could have two nearly identical firearms; one legal, the other illegal. The only difference between the two would be something as simple as a barrel shroud (a covering that prevents the user from burning their hand on the hot barrel) or a flash suppressor (which stops the flash from going into the eyes of ONLY the user). The laws simply don't make sense. The question then becomes "why would someone want a semi-automatic weapon". There are many reasons why these are useful. Despite what you may have heard, an AR-15 makes an excellent weapon for home defense or hunting small (think coyote or smaller) animals.

  • The definition of "Assault weapons" is expanded with each new ban, originally it included light machine guns, machine pistols, high caliber rifles, drum magazines, High capacity magazines, and things like elephant guns. NOW they are attempting to expand that to cover Semi-auto rifles, Some pistols, ammunition used for big game hunting, and magazines with more than a 10 round capacity. The term Assault weapons is simply being modified to cover all guns, which is colliding with peoples interpretations of the 2nd amendment.

  •
I'm still curious as to why people want to own assault weapons in the first place.
Some people just like to collect them, others enjoy shooting them. Some use them to hunt with, and other keep them as protection. Really, so long as the person legally obtains the weapon, there's no need to question why they want it. There are hundreds of thousands of legal gun owners who don't go on shooting rampages. One event caused by an illegal user shouldn't cause the ones who obey the laws to be penalized.

  • Various reasons. AR-15s are fun to shoot with. And fun to build, from what I can tell (will test this theory eventually).

  • So...the biggest reason is that they're "fun"?

I gave an example, not the "biggest" reason. But, do you have a problem with that? That some consider gun ownership to be an enjoyable hobby?

  • No. If that's a person's hobby, whatever. I'm not an advocate for the bans. If a people are responsible, then I'm all for them keeping their guns. That said I think it's a dumb hobby, where risk alone completely outweighs the usefulness or fun-factor of owning a gun. (I'm speaking about the average person. Not, for example, shop owners or regular hunters.)

Well, owning and using a gun isn't particularly risky given good gun safety practices. That's not to say there's zero risk, but I'm willing to bet that something as common as driving a car is riskier.

  • I'm sure its risk factor is low in the hands of the right people. I'd be worried about the other people that steal guns and go nutz. So who's to blame, the person that used the guns or the person that didn't take enough measures in storing them? Gun advocates don't want to be the first guy just as much as gun-control advocates don't want to be the second guy. Listen, I'm not trying to debate. Actually, I'm trying not to debate. Personally, I try to stay away from the topic. I try to remove myself from the situation by simply not owning a gun and, well, not shooting people. Personally, I don't understand why others wouldn't do the same. But this is all, well, it's just, like, my opinion, man.

Personally, I don't understand why others wouldn't do the same.
Because the vast majority, and by vast I mean VAST, extremely large numbers of people can own many guns and not be any more at risk of shooting another person than you are.

  • Is there something wrong with law-abiding citizens having fun in a way which hurts nobody else? You seem to forget the people who shoot up places largely have guns which aren't legally theirs, and in the few cases where they are legal, it's a rare case. I would wager easily less than .01% of gun owners shoot places up. Penalizing everybody because of less than a hundredth of one percent is absurd.
