Pessimism In the Forums...

Anyone who has been on these forums for any stretch of time knows how negative they can be, and how often they can be that way. And for one thing, I get it: the forums are likely one of the easiest places for any player to post feedback that Bungie might actually see, either positive or negative, and I also understand that, for the average person, there's more motivation to go out of your way to offer complaints rather than praise. Criticism is more likely to bring positive change than sugar-coating our responses to Bungie, which we obviously should never do; we don't owe them that. Some of you people though? Come ON! The occasional positive post I DO see almost always seems to have its comments section filled with defeatist cynics flaming the author for having the GALL to express positive feedback about Bungie or Destiny. Get a grip! I'm truly sorry that you are in a place of overwhelming negativity about Bungie or Destiny as a whole, and while that is 100% entirely justified, others are also entitled to their own POSITIVE opinions. Some of the people who, like myself, have been here since early D1, know just how much potential this franchise has, and we just want to see it realized. You wanna know something even crazier? Some of us even hold out hope for Bungie to realize some of that potential, with what's happened in recent years!🤯 Optimism, huh? Crazy, I know. Speaking purely from my thoughts now: I love this game. I really do I have made tons of friends, made countless memories, and I have a folder with MANY gigs of purely screenshots and clips I've gathered in this game from over the years, because this game has been around for nearly half of my life. I started playing D1 with friends from middle school, and I am now about to graduate from undergrad, and I'm STILL playing with my same two buddies from back then. They are my fireteam, and we all love this game and are grateful for what it has done for us. Again, I am not denying the plethora of reasons any person has to feel upset, because I'm upset about plenty of things too! At the same time though, there are people who love this game just like myself and my buds. My request to anyone who has a negative opinion or criticism: please, voice your concern, but do not go out of your way to invalidate others' positivity. TL;DR: Let people enjoy the game, and don't push your negative opinions onto others. I would love to have discussion in the comments! :)

  • They really dont deserve any praise from the community from how much of a mess the game has been since Lightfall launch.

  •
I also understand that, for the average person, there's more motivation to go out of your way to offer complaints rather than praise.
There is very, very, VERY little to be praised about the current state of the game; continued treatment of players by Bungie; blatant redirection of Destiny's talent and funding to Marathon; and Bungie's PR Bull-crap face saving attempt to acknowledge the state of everything.

  • If most of the "optimistic" posts didn't read like totally delusional, uninformed ramblings, I might agree with you. And even still, I don't think those people should be harassed or yelled at for their opinions, but this is 1000% the place to challenge and combat those opinions. This is quite literally the space MADE for us to do so. If someone posts saying they're enjoying the game for what it is and having fun with their friends, cool. I'm not going to bother that person or that post with my criticisms. Unfortunately most of the praise posts I see aren't that and are usually filled with any number of misconceptions and whining about other people not liking something as much as they do and not understanding why.

"Some of the people who, like myself, have been here since early D1, know just how much potential this franchise" had. It's been 9 years, if the potential hasn't been realized by now it's not going to be. I'm the "defeatist cynics" I guess but I just don't see this game having more than 2 DLCs left in it. Were not in the first half anymore, we're on the way out.

        • Praise can be good, but critique is more prevalent when people are unhappy with things and trying to create change.

              • I don't mind players being pessimistic, but it's annoying that some of the people here take out their frustrations on others in the forums. Most of the time people get frustrated with me for reasons out of my control I gotta remind them that I'm not the cause of their frustrations and they gotta be nicer. IRL I'm not your daddy, your mama, your boss, or anyone that could be the source of your current problems so I didn't do it you. On here I'm not Bungie and I'm not the one doing all this. Direct your frustrations at the source not at what's conveniently nearby or communicate like a functional human being

Often, I try to engage in normal conversation, or as normal a conversation as text permits, and I'm quite often insulted because I feel players are just in that mindset of, "This is a negative place. Everyone must be negative.". The other day, a Guardian who go error coded out of a solo flawless dungeon attempt voiced their frustration in the forums. Sure, I could have fueled the negative filled post, but I opted to encourage the Guardian to take a break and return to the dungeon when they're ready. I posted some words of encouragement and let it be. Someone responded to my post by saying, "Yikes.", and then went on to say that fake positivity is best left to the content creators/streamers. Ultimately, that person and I ended up have a great conversation, but not after a rather long dialog of expressing my genuine attitude on the matter. It's interactions like that that make it harder to engage with players. There's so much negativity already. Why add to it? I just try to keep it light, tight and bright and have fun.

There’s nothing wrong with criticism when it’s delivered honestly and accurately. Focussing on only positive or negative will give a false impression — like you say, these forums focus mainly on the negative. I’ve had people on here tell me they don’t want to write anything positive because it ‘lets Bungie off the hook’. Then you’ve got the people having the forum equivalent of a temper tantrum and the ever-present trolls. Video gaming is a fun hobby — a luxury really. If people can’t find enjoyment in a game, but continue to buy/play it, or negatively linger in the forums for it, that tells me much more about them than the game itself.
