Sentimental Destiny

Does anyone who has played Destiny since Day One (2014 release) ever feel this? Sentimental Let me take you back to September 2014, when I was in high school as a freshman. Destiny had came out. It was a new IP, new Bungie era, new console era, and new community. I spent probably from what I recall 80 hours a week on this game alongside Halo: MCC grinding the gear and armor! Then shift to December when I got the first DLC Dark Below from my sister, it was awesome, then shift to May 2015 when things were a bit dire. I didn’t have the income to afford House of Wolves and missed the good gameplay of PVE content. Later in August/September, I traded in D1 and other games for Destiny: The Taken King Edition. Then Iron Wolves released and when D2 came out I was excited for it as well as the new content. Flash forward today, I’m still playing Destiny 2. What’s the catch? I have been on and off with Destiny. As a D1 Veteran, I have to vent or get this sentiment off my chest that as a video gamer I have obligations right? Obligations to play other games. Metro 2033, Borderlands Handsome Jack Collection, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Fallout 4, etc. I’m not the sort of video gamer who sticks around a live-service game for their entire life but when New Light came out in 2019, my curiosity returned! That was such an unexpected moment! To think that anyone can hop on and experience Destiny 2 for themselves is amazing! Even D1 veterans like me who witnessed such a big game reach out to the mainstream. And this is really hard to describe because I share a love-hate relationship with Destiny 2 particularly. Growing up and focusing on my education, I put aside video games to study Computer Science and graduated to get into college so I can have a brighter future with a degree! When Forsaken released around the time I entered college, I didn’t have the interest or moneh to invest into so I continued with other games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Black Ops 4. When I played New Light that Fall Semester, the nostalgic memories of D1 flowed into my skull when I created a new character and it was Deja Vu! My perspective towards Destiny 2 didn’t change until, now correct me if I’m wrong, when Beyond Light released in Fall 2020. I had GamePass at the time and in it included past DLC like Curse of Osiris and Warmind. I didn’t think of at the time, but I was falling behind the train (lol I know it’s a Destiny train as my best friend described it). When I heard that content got archived or locked out to new players, I was perplexed. Like I get it technical wise that you don’t want to destroy your storage with so much content of gigabytes, but it rubbed me off wrong. I raged quilted when the Lost Sectors came out during BL and I stopped playing D2 lol. From the beginning of 2021 to the end of it, I didn’t bother much with D2, except some small periods of going back and seeing how it was, but my primary concern for games at the time were Resident Evil Village and Halo Infinite. I didn’t play Shadow Keep or anything that time, so when I went back to play Destiny 2… I felt lost! I felt like I didn’t know what was going on, I felt like things were strange, the atmosphere evolved, and I couldn’t recognize myself. How can people stay with Destiny 2 these past 5-6 years and spend money on Seasons & Expansions? That’s what I have always wondered. Now today in March 2023, Lightfall released and as a free to play player, I’m locked out of past content, I’m broke and don’t have enough time to grind for money because I’ve been struggling both financially and socially, especially when talking about Destiny 2. Does anyone else know or relate to what I’m talking about? Like retrospective wise, Destiny 2 has grown so so much and I respect Bungie for the changes they have sacrificed and made to ensure the state of the game it is today. Let me know what you think about this post and how you see Destiny 2 (both sentimental value wise and personal relationship.) Thank you TL;DR - I’m a free to play D1 Veteran and I experienced FOMO anxiously while looking back at the timeline of D2.
